The Brontes at Haworth
The Brontes at Haworth | Ann Dinsdale
6 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
The three Bront sisters Anne, Charlotte and Emily moved to Haworth Parsonage as children in 1820. It was there, on the edge of the dramatic landscape of the Yorkshire Moors, that they produced some of the most memorable, influential and best-loved novels in the English language. Ann Dinsdale paints a detailed picture of everyday life at Haworth in the 1840s, recounting the Bront family history and describing the local village and surrounding countryside. She goes on to consider the Bronts' poetry and novels in the context of their socio-historic background. This book provides fascinating insight into the lives of the authors of The Tenant of Wildfell Hall, Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights and will be a must for both literature students and Bront admirers. It is illustrated with numerous rarely seen images from the Haworth archives, including drawings by Charlotte and Emily, together with evocative pictures by local photographer Simon Warner.

I warned you all that I was on one of my Bronte binges. ? In my defense, it was only Qa (although it DID take a month to get here).

Moray_Reads Well the churchyard looks much neater there than it did on Sunday! 7y
LeahBergen @Moray_Reads Does it? Maybe it is most photogenic in autumn? 😉 It looks really nice in winter, all covered in snow (at least from the photos in this book - I visited in summer). Did you stay in Haworth overnight or did you do a day trip? 7y
LauraBrook Wow, only Qa?!?! Score! 7y

Several of the costumes from the BBC's To Walk Invisible are currently in display in the Parsonage museum which was a lovely touch. If anyone watched it at Christmas did you realise that many of the shots are actually a specially-constructed replica Parsonage built on the hill behind the real thing?

tpixie Love the #FunFact ! 7y
LeahBergen I was wondering how much was actually filmed in The Parsonage! 😮 7y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen there were pictures of the construction, the whole building was basically made out of plywood and chipboard! And the higher location gave better views of the moors 7y
