Happenstance
Happenstance: The Wife's Story | Carol Shields
5 posts | 4 read | 2 to read
These two unique novels tell the stories of Jack and Brenda Bowman during a rare weekend apart in their many years of marriage. Jack is at home coping with domestic crises and two uncouth adolescents, while immobilized by self-doubt and questioning his worth as a historian. Brenda, travelling alone for the first time, is in a strange city grappling with an array of emotions and toying with the idea of an affair. Intimate and insightful yet never sentimental, Happenstance is a profound portrait of a marriage and the differences between the sexes that bring life and a sense of isolation into even the most loving of relationships.

Almost everyone I knew read The Stone Diaries - her Pulitzer winner - so I really don't understand why her other books get so little attention. I loved this His Story/Her Story device and felt like I was eavesdropping on the lives of two very real people in a small period of disruption. If Franzen had written it, they would worship at his feet.

CarolynM I agree with you. I loved this one too. 5y

I raced through this book :)
I found the best wife's perspective really understandable, even though her life us vastly different to mine and of some decades ago. I think it's the femaleness.
The husband began to irritate me at times. I did have some positivity towards him, in hus frustrations at work and when he recounts friendships but less so.
Shields is such a readable writer, and also keeps my trail of thought once I've finished.

In the midst of decorating! This account is shown from both spouse's perspective. Looking forward to reading more... once I've cleared the paint off my hands!

Lcsmcat ❤️ her work, but haven‘t read this one. Stacked! 6y
rachaich @Lcsmcat - it's very good. I'm halfway through the wife's account. I love how she uses the character's memories yo create the scene. 6y

I've been on a us states tour on gr for a while so had to pop over there to find what i had read for pensyllvania. This book is in two halfs, after half 1 which is either husband or wife's account of events you turn it upside down and back to front to read the other spouse. Family are based in philly, and wife goes of to a quilt convention. I recall enjoying as i have with most CS books.

Cinfhen Hahaha "wife goes off on a quilt convention" don't hear that excuse too often! ?? 7y
