Pygmy | Chuck Palahniuk
9 posts | 51 read | 22 to read
Begins here first account of operative me, agent number 67 on arrival midwestern American airport greater _____ area. Flight _____. Date _____. Priority mission top success to complete. Code name: Operation Havoc. Thus speaks Pygmy, one of a handful of young adults from a totalitarian state sent to the United States, disguised as exchange students, to live with typical American families and blend in, all the while planning an unspecified act of massive terrorism. Palahniuk depicts Midwestern life through the eyes of this thoroughly indoctrinated little killer, who hates Americans with a passion, in this cunning double-edged satire of a xenophobia that might, in fact, be completely justified. From the Hardcover edition.

I know this is supposed to be satire, but it was gratuitous and, quite frankly, kinda gross. And while the writing style was certainly unique, it quickly became distracting. I think I might not be quite smart enough for this one. 🤷🏻‍♀️
That said, there were some funny parts (the running joke about the missing batteries is hilarious, albeit a little vulgar), and I think I liked the ending. (CONT‘D ⬇️)…

Maggie4483 My cousin loaned this to me, and I gave her Zombie by Joyce Carol Oates. After I gave her Zombie (heavily based on Jeffrey Dahmer and VERY disturbing), I worried what she would think of me for recommending it. It only took until Ch. 2 of Pygmy to realize I had nothing to worry about. We are definitely cut from the same cloth 👯‍♀️ 2y

Palahniuk is always darkly funny, twisted, disturbing and this particular work of satire is no different. It‘s told through dispatch reports of a teenage operative from a totalitarian state, who uses staccato broken English, yet has an expansive military/medical vocabulary. The goal? Infiltrate the US to complete an act of terrorism called Operation Havoc - all while making hilarious commentary on American life. Caution: Very adult and offensive

NikkiM5 That sounds good, stacking 👍🏾 3y
AFrostCauseReads @NikkiM5 I highly recommend reading along to the audiobook (it‘s on Hoopla). The writing style would have been a major hurdle for me without it 😊 3y
NikkiM5 @Charlene1321 thanks for the heads up, I will do that 3y

Foreign exchange student & North Korean secret agent, Pygmy is sent to America as part of a secret terrorist operation. This is my least favorite Palahniuk that I've read so far, the concept of writing it in Pygymy's immigrant English wore thin after awhile. Palahniuk's tendency to veer from the satirical to the juvenile is even more on display here. Would have made a better novella.

I was confused until I heard an audio sample then it started to make sense. I think it takes a unique individual to appreciate this book. I liked it couldn‘t imagine the average person feeling the same way.

Classic Palahniuk ❤️ once you get used to the language, it makes for a fun, very twisted, but great read

Finally got my library card 📚🙌🏽 these should be fun reads ❤️💚💛

TieDyeDude Palahniuk is one of my favorite authors. It may take a little bit to adjust to the narrators voice in Pygmy, but it's a fun challenge. 6y

LiterRohde @C.Perone Thanks. This is my first time joining any of the challenges. Doing #ReadingResolutions & #QuotsyMay18 and I was hoping not to disappoint by picking low hanging fruit. Gotta strain my brain for the good ones. 6y
TheBookgeekFrau Didn‘t disappoint in the least! Don‘t strain too much otherwise the fun gets lost lol I‘m doing both those challenges, too. I love that they give me an opportunity to revisit books I haven‘t read in years. Looking forward to more of your posts😊 6y

The beers we got tonight, named after a song by my favorite band (an OK song). If not coffee or water, O typically drink beer while reading. Also, a stack of yellow titles!

Found while unpacking: a signed Chuck Palahniuk penguin. What does one do with such a thing?

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Hang it up in the corner of the room over the bookshelf or something. 8y
