The Ballad of the Sad Cafe
The Ballad of the Sad Cafe | Carson McCullers
A classic work that has charmed generations of readers, this collection assembles Carson McCullerss best stories, including her beloved novella The Ballad of the Sad Caf. A haunting tale of a human triangle that culminates in an astonishing brawl, the novella introduces readers to Miss Amelia, a formidable southern woman whose caf serves as the towns gathering place. Among other fine works, the collection also includes Wunderkind, McCullerss first published story written when she was only seventeen about a musical prodigy who suddenly realizes she will not go on to become a great pianist. Newly reset and available for the first time in a handsome trade paperback edition, The Ballad of the Sad Caf is a brilliant study of love and longing from one of the Souths finest writers.

Mehso-so

I read this last weekend and forgot to post about it. I expected to enjoy this because of how much I liked The Member of the Wedding, and I was surprised that didn't really. The titular story is by far the longest and it didn't appeal to me. #storyaday2023

Although I wrote an enthusiastic review upon finishing McCullers' book a little over a year ago, I haven't posted about it since. Since the title work struck a chord with me, it is perfect for #titlethatstartswithb Adapted into a film in '91, it seems to be McCuller's second most well known work. Although I am not yet a completionist, it is not really hard to see why. I read many novellas last year & this was one of the best. In my original (cont)

vivastory review posted on Litsy I wrote, “Ballad is a heartbreaking, outstanding work that has several characteristics in common with Heart is a Lonely Hunter while remaining distinct..“ I stand behind this completely. #marchmagic @alwaysbeenaloverofbooks @eggs 14mo

The Ballad of the Sad Café is a collection of a novella & several stories. The only work that left me indifferent is Wunderkind. I might revisit it at some point to see if there is an element I overlooked that would jump out upon a second reading. The standout story is Madame Zilensky & the King of Finland. The titular character, a talented composer, joins Mr. Brook on the faculty of Ryder College. She begins telling Mr. Brook offbeat stories,👇

vivastory including the time that she saw the King of Finland pass by while eating a pastry. McCullers speaks of the need for harmless illusions & in a particularly memorable passage describes the vicarious nature of lies that are not malicious, of allowing people to live multiple lives. The ending paragraph of the story is one of my favorite endings of any work that I have read so far this year.
The title novella is about a desolate town with no community
2y
vivastory life outside of church. This changes when the abrasive & independent Ms. Amelia receives a visit from a man claiming to be her cousin. To the great surprise of the community she not only welcomes him into her home but they soon open a Café which becomes the center of the community. There is a certain passage where McCullers speaks about the democracy of the Café, it is a place where everyone is welcome regardless of their economic station. 2y
vivastory Conflict arises once her ex-husband is introduced into the narrative. The novella length of this work allows McCullers room to flesh out the characters, including loathsome individuals such as Marvin Macy. Ballad is a heartbreaking, outstanding work that has several characteristics in common with Heart is a Lonely Hunter while remaining distinct. 2y

Love these stories as much as I did when I first read them. The title story in particular is very good. Moss Amelia is one of the most vivid characters I've ever read.

Heart rending, as I expect from Carson McCullers. I had to skip one of the stories cause it was just too raw. All of them were so powerful, so kind of desperate with a special kind of southern bleakness that was different from English bleakness in a way I can‘t quite put my finger on. Definitely not a beach read, not easy for the soul, but I also wish it had been longer.

When Miss Amelia‘s rejected husband, Marvin Macy, arrives back in town, all hell breaks loose. American gothic at its finest. #ohnonotyouagain #marchintooz

First of all, love is a joint experience between two persons — but the fact that it is a joint experience does not mean that it is a similar experience to the two people involved. There are the lover and the beloved, but these two come from different countries. Often the beloved is only a stimulus for all the stored-up love which had lain quiet within the lover for a long time hitherto. And somehow every lover knows this.
