Unearthing years of buried secrets, Rilla Brae is haunted by ghostly visions tied to the tainted history of a mysterious island in this haunting novel from the author of The Girl Who Fell. Maine-bred, independent Rilla Brae is no stranger to the deep. She knows the rhythms of hard work and harder seas. But when she experiences the sudden death of her father, the veil between the living and the dead blurs and she begins to be haunted by a girl on a nearby, uninhabited island. The girl floats a song over the waves, and it is as beautiful as it is terrifying. Familiar and distant. Then Rilla meets Sam, a University of Southern Maine archeology student tasked with excavating the very island where the ghostly girl has appeared. Sam sifts the earth looking for the cultural remains of an island people who were forcibly evicted by the state nearly a hundred years ago. Sam tells Rilla the island has a history no locals talk aboutif they know about it at alldue to the shame the events brought to the working waterfront community. All Rilla knows for sure is that the island has always been therean eerie presence anchored in the stormy sea. Now Sams work and the ghostly girls song lure Rilla to the islands shores. As Rilla helps Sam to unearth the islands many secrets, Rillas visions growuntil the two discover a tragedy kept silent for years. And its a tragedy that has everything to do with Rillas past.

Not how mental illness works. You don‘t see ghosts. Mental illness shouldn‘t have been a plot line. Ghost stories can happen without pretending there‘s mental illness. Also not actually how it is in Maine for the young. A LOT go away for college. Some do end up back or can‘t leave but college even community college is a big option. Honestly it was a big mess. ⭐️⭐️

akckitty Books that poorly represent mental illness - 🙅👎 definitely no thanks. 6y
Chasingmermaids There‘s also white savor syndrome. Though the author tries to make it okay by secretly making the Mc black but who had no idea bc they‘re so pale? I get the need for characters of color who pass white. But this wasn‘t passing. She was in every way white. Like the whole thing was super messy. She basically stole a recent story that happened here but did it in a bad way. 6y

For my work reading challenge. As someone from Maine I‘m very meh with this book so far. A little too “white savior” trope for my liking. Though, this is based on an actual event in the states history. I just think it could do better. We‘ll see. I‘m only 30% in.

Chasingmermaids I‘m determined to finish. But I‘m not overly happy about it. 6y

I‘ve read and loved the first two books of this pile but I‘d really appreciate the chance to read the rattles bones and manhattan beach! They sound so interesting and I like the feminism twist on them! My favorite snack would probably be something chocolate based. I don‘t eat chocolate that much but when I do it‘s the best! Thanks @Eggs for holding this #65Kgiveaway !!!

Find Me. The words following Rilla wherever she goes. It started with a ghostly voice singing from the stormy seas surrounding the town.

Then the visions started.

She can feel the girl's pain, sadness, fear. Its clear that there might be more to these visions than hallucinations. The voices whisper to Rilla in the middle of the night. Sung to her over the ocean's whistling waves.

FIND ME.

How can Rilla help someone only she can see?

My dearest @Shannon_McKinney 💖 This was such an amazing box, and I can tell how much thought you put into it! And your lovely letter to me! I laid this all out on something nice because we don‘t have a tree up yet 😭 All the little details, including the yummy smelling candles (in scents I love), are fab, but MOST important, are my books, including two, THE WOOD, and THE RATTLED BONES that I have wanted to read FOREVER! I want to HUG you! 💓😽

Shannon_McKinney I‘m glad it all arrived safely! I was super nervous with it being my first ever Book Swap, so I hope you have and will have enjoyed the books, and the goodies! I think I forgot to mention in the letter that the Esther Price Chocolates are an Ohio must give for Christmas. They‘re made in Ohio, only about 30 minutes from my house actually. 😊 6y
kamoorephoto @Shannon_McKinney It was all perfect...I know you were nervous, but you needn‘t have been! You put so much thought into my box! And I just put up my calendar 😻 I‘ll be sending you a card super soon 💓💓 6y

I thought of doing a Halloween theme for this book. Very apt for a paranormal mystery.

Warning: Some spoilers.

The fact that this is based on true events is just, well IDK. What happened to the people makes me angry and sad. I loved Rilla for being strong and independent. I want to have tea with Gram and pick her brain.

Sept. 24-30,2017 is Banned Books Week.

I've had my fair share of banned books just because someone thinks they are a bad influence. Do you have a banned books story?

I got this book in my YA PageHabit box and this book was annotated by the author. I really enjoyed this book with the realistic aspects and the ghost story. There were times I was literally creeped out and got chills. The relationships and themes in the book were phenomenal. I could not put this book down. Only thing is I think the book could have been edited more.

I ordered a Page Habit box with the coupon and I am really pleased! The cactus and feathers are pens. Cute socks, bookmarks, and a short story!

The_Heeler_Booklife I got this box too! My socks were maroon though. Have you started the book yet? 7y
josie281 @allthingskayla I have not. My son finished How It Went Down and liked it though. It appeared similar to The Hate You Give. 7y

I love a good ghost story, and this one has some pretty creepy, shivery moments. Combine those spine-tingling scenes with an interesting backstory and you‘ve got a solid, satisfying read. And look at that cover! Full review at http://itsallaboutthebook.org
