A Poison Dark and Drowning (Kingdom on Fire, Book Two)
A Poison Dark and Drowning (Kingdom on Fire, Book Two) | Jessica Cluess

Devastatingly magical and monstrously romantic. I cant decide if this book stole my heart or ripped it out of my chest. Stephanie Garber, author of Caraval The magicians want her to lead. The sorcerers want her to lie. The demons want her blood. Henrietta wants to save the one she loves. But will his dark magic be her undoing? In this seductive and explosive second book in the Kingdom on Fire series, Jessica Cluess delivers her signature mix of magic, passion, and teen warriors fighting for survival. Hand to fans of Victoria Aveyard, Sarah J. Maas, and Kiersten White. Henrietta doesnt need a prophecy to know that shes in danger. She came to London to be named the chosen one, the first female sorcerer in centuries, the one who would defeat the Ancients. Instead, she discovered a city ruled by secrets. And the biggest secret of all: Henrietta is not the chosen one. Still, she must play the role in order to keep herself and Rook, her best friend and childhood love, safe. But can she truly save him? The poison in Rooks system is transforming him into something monstrous as he begins to master dark powers of his own. So when Henrietta finds a clue to the Ancients past that could turn the tide of the war, she persuades Blackwood, the mysterious Earl of Sorrow-Fell, to travel up the coast to seek out strange new weapons. And Magnus, the brave, reckless flirt who wants to win back her favor, is assigned to their mission. Together, they will face monsters, meet powerful new allies, and uncover the most devastating weapon of all: the truth. Praise for A Shadow Bright and Burning: Is it clear that Cluess adores the Harry Potter series and Jane Eyre? Yes. So do you. So does everyone. What matters is that her voice is her own. . . . A Shadow Bright and Burning delivers on the promise of its title. This is a novel that gives off light and heat. The New York Times The magic! The intrigue! The guys! We were sucked into this monster-ridden alternative England from page one. Henrietta is literally a girl on fire and this team of sorcerers training for battle had a pinch of Potter blended with a drop of [Cassandra Clares] Infernal Devices. Justine Unputdownable. I loved the monsters, the magic, and the teen warriors who are their worlds best hope! Jessica Cluess is an awesome storyteller! Tamora Pierce, #1 New York Times bestselling author

I love this series so far, I love and hate the characters but I feel like that just makes them more real. The story itself is filled with surprises and secrets that make me eager to read the next one.

I'm really happy I reread this before picking up A Sorrow Fierce and Falling cause I had forgotten EVERYTHING! This book just screwed up everything Henrietta had going positively in her life during book 1. Loved getting to see her adapt on the fly and learn who to really trust

I loved this book! As our characters hurtle towards the ultimate fight with the Ancients, I found it was hard to put the book down. My only complaint is that the author doesn‘t take the time to hash out feelings between the would-be lovers... so I end up not really caring who Henrietta ends up with. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This series is outstanding! Seriously, I love these characters and this story. Jessica Cluess magically combines romance and adventure to create this nail-biting Victorian fantasy. Each character has their own distinct personality that shines through in their dialogue and actions. The storyline is fast paced and had me pouring over every page to find out what happened next. APDAD didn‘t end on a cliffhanger, but I was not ready for it to end yet!

Book two deepens the saga. I‘m just as hooked as ever, and puzzling over what may come next in the prophecy.

This book wasn't perfect and had some issues but I did thoroughly enjoy the plot and the conflicts set up for the conclusion of the trilogy. Parts of it broke my heart.

I need to see how the whole "every guys loves Henrietta" trope gets played out. I do LOVE that Henrietta is the main character but not the "chosen one" and that these important characters are outsiders of the society. I adore Mariah and want to see how she grows into this role.

OSChamberlain Love that cover! 7y

Omg I didn't think that this series could get better but Jessica has outdone herself! She upped the magic, romance, and secrets and oh my gosh there's some big reveals in this book! And now I'm really dying to read book 3!
