The name Darcy Coates is inescapable to contemporary horror readers. Although there are no big publishing marketing firms behind her, Coates has largely built her reputation through a prolific output & by word of mouth. Quarter to Midnight is my first experience with her work. A collection of linked horror stories, which I love as a format. As for the stories themselves: Coates loves to play with tropes. There are stories about vampires, (CONT)

vivastory ghosts, creepy kids, serial killers, mannequins, I'm not knocking her for this. I think that the appeal of this book, outside of being linked stories, is knowing her strengths. This is cozy horror. This is like Goosebumps for adults where much of the violence & gore happens off the page, My favorite line in the book: “What the hell sort of hazing is this? Jasmine rubbed at her arms as goose bumps rose over them. I'm trying tp join (CONT) 2mo
vivastory a book club, not a cult.“ I was occasionally reminded of Twilight Zone while reading this & I would recommend one episode in particular if you do read this. The creepy “After Hours“ episode. Is Coates a new favorite author of mine? No. Will I read more by her? Yes! Y'all, Horror fiction has range. 2mo
Branwen Okay, this literally sounds like the perfect horror for me! 🥰 2mo

Pickpick

Overall a pick. Some stories were better than others and I skipped one of the stories because I‘m not big on space/alien stuff.

I had hoped to finish this before the New Year but with work, it just wasn‘t possible. So it became the first book read for 2019!
