Barracuda: A Novel | Christos Tsiolkas

Man Booker Prize-longlisted author of The Slap (soon to be an NBC miniseries) returns in an immensely moving (Sunday Times) story of a young athletes coming of age Fourteen-year-old Daniel Kelly is special. Despite his upbringing in working-class Melbourne, he knows that his astonishing ability in the swimming pool has the potential to transform his life, silence the rich boys at the private school to which he has won a sports scholarship, and take him far beyond his neighborhood, possibly to international stardom and an Olympic medal. Everything Danny has ever done, every sacrifice his family has ever made, has been in pursuit of this dream. But what happens when the talent that makes you special fails you? When the goal that youve been pursuing for as long as you can remember ends in humiliation and loss? Twenty years later, Dan is in Scotland, terrified to tell his partner about his past, afraid that revealing what he has done will make him unlovable. When he is called upon to return home to his family, the moment of violence in the wake of his defeat that changed his life forever comes back to him in terrifying detail, and he struggles to believe that hell be able to make amends. Haunted by shame, Dan relives the intervening years he spent in prison, where the optimism of his childhood was completely foreign. Tender, savage, and blazingly brilliant, Barracuda is a novel about dreams and disillusionment, friendship and family, class, identity, and the cost of success. As Daniel loses everything, he learns what it means to be a good personand what it takes to become one. From the Hardcover edition.

Stopped reading half way. He's an excellent writer but reading it is not fun cos you know what's coming and it's unpleasant. Similar vibe to Loaded.

Pickpick

This is my second read from Christos Tsiolkas. It was fantastic! Daniel Kelly is from a working class family and is accepted at a fancy school on a swimming scholarship. Barracuda explores what it takes to be a good swimmer and the difficultés of becoming a man. Told in a nonlinear fashion and through 1st and 3rd person, I was totally engrossed and admired Tsiolkas‘s intelligent writing ability.

#MarchIntoThe70s Day 9: Here‘s #Barracuda for you written by one of Australia‘s most beloved authors. While I was in Sydney, I stayed with an Aussie librarian friend who adores Tsiolkas and has practically all his books. The Slap apparently, is one of his best. He is said to depict Aussie life quite accurately. I bought this book at a book sale along with these other goodies, see link here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-fbH

BarbaraBB I really liked The Slap indeed and then read some more by him. This one I didb‘t though! 5y
gradcat The Slap was great! Aussie tv show was good; American version sucked....I haven‘t read any others by him, though. (edited) 5y
Cinfhen This book sounds good but I‘ve seen mixed reviews. Definitely couldn‘t find a better book choice though💙 5y

#Swimming is a serious sport in Australia. Barracuda explores the toll taken on young people identified as talented athletes and pressured to perform with little regard for their development in other aspects of their lives. #ReadingResolutions

BarbaraBB Is it good? I loved The Slap but was a bit disappointed by 6y
CarolynM @BarbaraBB I haven't read The Slap because I was so put off by Loaded but a friend raved about Barracuda so I read it. I liked it and there's some good stuff about parents and children (and the education system) in there but he's not an author I would seek out. 6y
BarbaraBB Okay I‘ll pass for now! 6y
Jeg Remember that I didn‘t like as much as the Slap. 6y

I definitely related to this. I was a senior in high school when this happened in April 1994 and I can still clearly remember the solemn mood in the school hallways, etc. I can't believe it was 23 years ago!

LeeRHarry I was on a bus in Ireland and we heard it on the radio - it's funny how where you find out some events really stick with you - thought this book was great too 😊 7y

#feistyfeb day 27: #australianauthors

I've had the good fortune of having visited almost all the major cities in Australia, except Canberra. Singapore is just a short flight away from Australia. But it's been a while since I've last been there - my last visit was to see Radiohead play in Sydney in 2004 (!) - and I think my knowledge of Australian writers is a bit dated. Here are some I have read and would love more recommendations!

RadicalReader @RealLifeReading love discovering the joys of Greek authors so incredible 7y

LeeRHarry Eucalyptus is in my top 10,, loved it! I think @Lizpixie has covered quite a few 😊 but I'll shout out for Peggy Frew and Cate Kennedy - particularly The World Beneath. Oh and I watched the ABC series of Barracuda, it was fantastic but I needed lots of tissues 😭 (edited) 7y
kirriemummy Also a teeny book called pobby and dingan which is set in the Australian opal mines and about a little girl whose imaginary friends get lost. It's amazing- look out for it!! 7y
