God's Kingdom
God's Kingdom | Howard Frank Mosher
3 posts | 1 read | 1 to read
Howard Frank Mosher is one of America's most acclaimed writers. His fiction, set in the world of Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, chronicles the intertwining family histories of the natives, wanderers, outcasts, and fugitives-white, Native American, escaped slaves fleeing north, French Canadians, and others-who settled in this remote and beautiful place. "God's Kingdom" explores the Kinneson family through the coming of age of the heir, Jim, and its rich and complicated history. Earnest and innocent, a bright high school student, Jim grows curious about the unspoken "trouble in the family" that haunts his father, a small-town newspaper editor, and his grandfather, a raconteur who keeps the Kinnesons' secrets to himself. Layer by layer, tale by tale, sorting out fact from deliberately obscured legend, Jim explores the Kinnesons' long relationship with others in the Kingdom, culminating in a discovery that forever changes his life and place in that world. Beginning with a magical Thanksgiving Day hunting trip in the autumn mountains, and ending with Jim on the brink of leaving home to find life-and perhaps love-on the other side of the ridge, "God's Kingdom" unfolds with the patient delight of a master storyteller.

This Vermont author won many awards throughout his career. He was beloved by Vermonters. His novels took place in the Northeast Kingdom, a rugged area of the state, alongside the Canadian border, where I live. His characters, always memorable, often were involved in smuggling, survival, and justice. Humor was always mixed in. He died in 2017 and I have always loved the chapel where his service was held. Check his writing out sometime!

Amiable My mother-in-law lived in the Northeast Kingdom for more than 30 years (she passed away last year). I hadn‘t heard of this author—I will definitely check him out! 4y
Suet624 @Amiable that‘s so cool. It‘s a beautiful area. The following tagged book is a good one if you can find it. I really loved the female character. But any of them are worth reading. 4y
ljuliel It‘s great to hear someone mention this author. He was a wonderful writer. That church looks almost exactly like the one we got married in 😱. I wondered how someone from Litsy knew where it was. It‘s in a really tiny “ village”, I guess you‘d call it. It‘s 143 years old. 4y

ljuliel @Scochrane26 I tagged you , as I thought you might like this author also if you haven‘t heard of him before. I‘d call him the Wendell Berry of New England. Their writing reminds me of the same type, only from completely different locations. 4y
Crazeedi A beautiful photo and the book sounds really good 4y
Suet624 @ljuliel that‘s a perfect description of Mosher, the Wendell Berry of New England. In fact I often get the two authors confused. 😀 Thanks for sharing your thoughts. 4y
ljuliel Or I could say it the opposite way. Wendell Berry is the Howard Frank Mosher of Kentucky. Something about their writing reminds me of each other. Maybe it‘s the descriptions of the land and surroundings, the people just living ordinary lives. They‘re both very talented. 4y
802Librarian He‘s one of my favorites too! 4y
Amiable @Suet624 She lived in North Troy, near Jay Peak. Beautiful area indeed, but rather remote to say the least! 4y
Amiable @ljuliel If Mosher is the Berry of New England and Berry is the Mosher of Kentucky, are they both the Wallace Stegner of the East Coast? 😀 4y
Suet624 @Amiable YES! (Nice work so early in the morning!) 4y
Suet624 @NHLibrarian have you read On Kingdom Mountain? For some reason that one really got me. 4y
Suet624 @Amiable ooohhhweee..she was in the hinterlands. Only 30 miles from me but you can‘t get there from here. 😂😂 4y
Amiable @Suet624 Ha Ha —having made the drive to North Troy many, many times over 30 years, I completely agree with your assessment of the Vermont travel conditions. 😀 4y
Scochrane26 @ljuliel @Suet624 Thanks for the rec. I haven‘t heard of this author but sounds like I would like him. Will put him on my list. 4y
ljuliel @Amiable Yes, and add Ivan Doig and Wallace Stegner as the Berry / Moshers of the West. They all write about scenery and everyday life, but they all make life sound special in each of their areas. (edited) 4y
ljuliel @amiable @Suet624 Do either of you have photos of the area that Mosher wrote about ? 4y
Suet624 @ljuliel try this: https://www.google.com/search?q=northeast%20kingdom&tbm=isch just type northeast kingdom VT and go to images. 4y
ljuliel Very pretty ! 4y
802Librarian @Suet624 Yes! That one along with Northern Borders and Disappearances are my favorites 4y

I was surprised by how few people have written posts about this author and his books. He is a wonderful writer. For those of you who have enjoyed his writing, I thought I'd share that he is now in hospice care for an untreatable and aggressive cancer. He is on Facebook if you want to write to him.

802Librarian That sucks! 😢 I love his books. 7y
Suet624 @NHLibrarian I know. 😩 7y
