The Men Who Stare at Goats
The Men Who Stare at Goats | Jon Ronson
In 1979 a secret unit was established by the most gifted minds within the U.S. Army. Defying all known accepted military practice -- and indeed, the laws of physics -- they believed that a soldier could adopt a cloak of invisibility, pass cleanly through walls, and, perhaps most chillingly, kill goats just by staring at them.Entrusted with defending America from all known adversaries, they were the First Earth Battalion. And they really weren't joking. What's more, they're back and fighting the War on Terror. With firsthand access to the leading players in the story, Ronson traces the evolution of these bizarre activities over the past three decades and shows how they are alive today within the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and in postwar Iraq. Why are they blasting Iraqi prisoners of war with the theme tune to Barney the Purple Dinosaur? Why have 100 debleated goats been secretly placed inside the Special Forces Command Center at Fort Bragg, North Carolina? How was the U.S. military associated with the mysterious mass suicide of a strange cult from San Diego? The Men Who Stare at Goats answers these and many more questions.Ronson's Them: Adventures with Extremists, a highly acclaimed international bestseller, examined the paranoia at the fringes of hate-filled extremist movements around the globe. The Men Who Stare at Goats reveals extraordinary and very nutty military secrets at the core of George W. Bush's War on Terror.

I would recommend this book for skeptical conspiracy theorists- lol. I loved it. It was hard to believe and unsettling but all true. Although the subject matter was dark, the author brought humor in which I liked. I did find it a bit hard to follow at times, but overall a great book. Give it a read!

I was looking for some light reading, so I picked up The Men Who Stare at Goats expecting the novel upon which the movie was based. Was I ever wrong! It was one of the strangest books I‘ve read, but is non-fiction. It about how the Army and CIA tried to use psychic powers to spy on enemies, to influence their behavior, etc. What got me the most was that so many of the characters actually believed the things they tried would actually work.

This crazy nonfiction ebook is on sale today.

GingerAntics I‘ve seen this one. The “nonfiction” classification confuses me. Is it REALLY nonfiction? I remember the crazy weird movie. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics yes it is really nonfiction! Yes crazy movie 4y
GingerAntics Okay, I‘m on this for $2. I‘ll read it with as open a mind as I can. 🤣 I read the description and couldn‘t help laughing. Then I double checked the genre, Apple Books is calling a “professional & technical.” Really hoping Apple Books isn‘t encouraging people to start their own psychic experiments. 4y

Texreader @GingerAntics ok then I bought it too. Let me know when you plan to read it and maybe we can compare notes. 4y
GingerAntics Will do. I know it won‘t be this month. I‘ve very nearly dug myself a reading hole with all the things I‘m reading simultaneously. 4y
Texreader @GingerAntics I figured that and me too! 4y
GingerAntics If I‘m suddenly posting weird manic things, I‘ve cracked. lol 4y

I had no idea this tagged book was a movie! Then I read that‘s it only Netflix a few more days so here I am watching it. There‘s a lot of irony in Ewan McGregor learning about the “Jedi,” the psychic army unit.

Hard to follow in places because of all the names and time skips but incredibly interesting none the less

The style of this book was amazing. I love how Jon Ronson investigates and how he sees these fasinating subjects. The problem is i cant get away with the military language. I get confused and bored by all the ranks and fort wherevers

For me it picked up towards the end when he was discussing victims of CIA drugging people with LSD

Id recommend this book to anyone who loves fasinating true stories as long as they dont hate military terminology

I think Ronson has written better books, but admittedly the topic itself is a reason to add this to your library.

You can‘t make this stuff up. Someone in the US army thought he could walk through walls. *shakes head*

I loved this book, but I do also love all of Jon Ronson's books. Although they are nonfiction they flow like a narrative and are always incredibly interesting!

I can totally see why they wanted to turn this book into a movie. From staring at goats to playing Barney songs over and over again this book had everything to showcase a bizarre look at the military! #bookreview #jonronson #themenwhostareatgoats
