The White Cat and the Monk
The White Cat and the Monk: A Retelling of the Poem Pangur Bn | Jo Ellen Bogart
8 posts | 11 read | 10 to read
A monk leads a simple life. He studies his books late into the evening and searches for truth in their pages. His cat, Pangur, leads a simple life, too, chasing prey in the darkness. As night turns to dawn, Pangur leads his companion to the truth he has been seeking. The White Cat and the Monk is a retelling of the classic Old Irish poem Pangur Bn. With Jo Ellen Bogarts simple and elegant narration and Sydneys Smiths classically inspired images, this contemplative story pays tribute to the wisdom of animals and the wonders of the natural world.

Join a thoughtful monk and his white cat, Pangur, as they spend their days doing what they love most. The White Cat and the Monk is a warm story about friendship and finding joy in everyday routines.

#ReadingResolutions Day 20: Definitely not #Rich by other people‘s standards, but this ascetic monk treasures “the wealth to be found in my books.” I find this book to be a profound meditation on a #rich life surrounded by books, the companionable solitude with a beloved pet who has its own equally-weighty pursuits, and the search for meaning and light in what once was dark. My TRIBE! My full review here: https://wp.me/pDlzr-euG

Not exactly #setinalibrary but in the Middle Ages most monasteries had a library of some sort, most books were actually found in monasteries. This is a lovely book based on an Old Irish poem that a monk scribbled in a manuscript. About him and his cat Pangur Ban (White Fuller) and how they live together. It's so beautiful and my favourite Old Irish poem.

'Me and Pangur Ban my cat,
'Tis a like task we're at.'
