The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch
The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch | Philip K. Dick
Not too long from now, when exiles from a blistering Earth huddle miserably in Martian colonies, the only things that make life bearable are the drugs. Can-D "translates" those who take it into the bodies of Barbie-like dolls. But now Palmer Eldritch has returned after a mysterious disappearance a decade ago, bringing with him a new drug, Chew-Z, even more powerful than Can-D. Marketed under the slogan, "God promises eternal life; we can deliver it," Chew-Z is as mysterious as Eldritch himself. As the readers learn the true origins of Chew-Z and Eldritch, it becomes clear that in a world fueled by hallucinogens, nothing can be taken at face value. In this wildly disoreinting funhouse of a novel, populated by God-like--or perhaps Satanic--takeover artists and corporate psychics, Philip K. Dick explores mysteries that were once the property of St. Paul and Aquinas. His wit, compassion, and knife-edged irony make The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch moving as well as genuinely visionary.

I know it's a genre classic and is appreciated by many. Despite its engaging language and pace, the narrative has numerous logical gaps, unresolved plot threads, and a murky ending. Though it explores intriguing concepts, none are fully developed. Furthermore, its misogyny, especially considering the era of its publication amidst second-wave feminism, is particularly jarring. One wonders if the author ever ventured beyond his hovel.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

I just don't even know where to begin with this craziness....In the future there exists a drug called Can-D. If you chew this while in the presence of what is called a PP Layout, you are mentally transported into the layout. The layout is basically a bizarro version of Barbie and Ken and their Dreamhouse. (PP stands for Perky Pat.) Totally bonkers. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

megnews I might totally do a drug that would transport me into a scene I‘d like to visit. Just not a ken and Barbie one! Imagining the possibilities. 5y
Brooke_H @megnews You might not after reading this book tho! 😂 5y

PKD is so great. He rarely disappoints. I‘ll be sad when I‘ve read his entire canon.

“I mean, after all; you have to consider we‘re only made out of dust. That‘s admittedly not much to go on and we shouldn‘t forget that. But even considering, I mean it‘s sort of a bad beginning, we‘re not doing too bad. So I personally have faith that even in this lousy situation we‘re faced with we can make it. You get me?” -Philip K. Dick, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch 🖤 #philipkdick #myPKDjourney

2BR02B I have this edition of The Man in the High Castle, but I hate the texture of the cover! 😖 I did something I never do and put tape on the cover so I wouldn't have to touch it. 6y
dystopianaut @2BR02B that‘s so funny! i LOVE the texture. all matte everything. 😍 actually quite a few of his books in this print edition (so far it seems like it‘s the lesser known ones) have a glossy finish, which drives me nuts because i want them all the be the same. 😂 6y
dystopianaut @vivastory he‘s the best! 💜 6y
dystopianaut @Jabberwocky agreed! i‘m always blown away by how many movies have been based on his stories. 6y

Disembodied eyes & mouth surely counts. I am mad for Philip K. Dick. The two books I read by him, "Ubik" & "Dr. Bloodmoney" are both among the best of their kind (mind bending interrogation of reality in one & post-apocalyptic in the other) that I've read. I have a pile of unread PKD & I am looking forward to experiencing them.

manifestsanity VALIS is my favorite PKD. 7y
vivastory @manifestsanity I have the entire trilogy arriving in the mail today. 7y
