Birds Without Wings
Birds Without Wings | Louis de Bernieres
Birds Without Wings traces the fortunes of one small community in southwest Turkey (Anatolia) in the early part of the last century a quirky community in which Christian and Muslim lives and traditions have co-existed peacefully over the centuries and where friendship, even love, has transcended religious differences. But with the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire and the onset of the Great War, the sweep of history has a cataclysmic effect on this peaceful place: The great love of Philothei, a Christian girl of legendary beauty, and Ibrahim, a Muslim shepherd who courts her from near infancy, culminates in tragedy and madness; Two inseparable childhood friends who grow up playing in the hills above the town suddenly find themselves on opposite sides of the bloody struggle; and Rustem Bey, a wealthy landlord, who has an enchanting mistress who is not what she seems. Far away from these small lives, a man of destiny who will come to be known as Mustafa Kemal Atatrk is emerging to create a country from the ruins of an empire. Victory at Gallipoli fails to save the Ottomans from ultimate defeat and, as a new conflict arises, Muslims and Christians struggle to survive, let alone understand, their part in the great tragedy that will reshape the whole region forever. A joy to read, effortless 600 pages. Not what I was expecting, a pleasant surprise.

I really tried to like this, I‘m 100 pages in, and just can‘t Figure out where the story is, or where it is going.

If you‘ve read it, and liked it, please tell me what I‘m missing. *
This goes into my very short DNF pile.

Nicos Just finished it. A page turner, and a very easy read. Very good I thought. Not every book has to have a plot 🙂 1y

Library sale!

I know hardly anyone liked Manhattan Beach but I seem to be running a mini lending library out of my home - and hopefully one of my “borrowers” will like it!

Cinfhen That‘s the sharing spirit!! I just read Manhattan Beach, it wasn‘t terrible but it‘s not special either 🙄 (edited) 5y

Cathythoughts I‘ll be interested to see what you think of The Green Road ... we had it for Bookclub recently enough 5y
Reggie I wonder if librarians at the library are like,”We don‘t have it but ask Paula, from M-Bay, she might.” Lol 5y
Centique @Reggie ha! The best thing is, on two occasions I‘ve requested an oldish book from another library, it‘s been delivered to my library, I‘ve read it and taken it back and they‘ve immediately put it on the sale table! #howtogetawesome1980sbooks 👍👍 5y

One of my favorite books.. It draws me in the way Allende's Eva Luna and Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude do.. And so few others. Louis de Bernières is a masterful storyteller.

Demelza I literally inhaled this book! One of my all time favourites. 8y
