It Was Me All Along
It Was Me All Along: A Memoir | Andie Mitchell
A yet heartbreakingly honest, endearing memoir of incredible weight loss by a young food blogger who battles body image issues and overcomes food addiction to find self-acceptance. All her life, Andie Mitchell had eaten lustily and mindlessly. Food was her babysitter, her best friend, her confidant, and it provided a refuge from her fractured family. But when she stepped on the scale on her twentieth birthday and it registered a shocking 268 pounds, she knew she had to change the way she thought about food and herself; that her life was at stake. It Was Me All Along takes Andie from working class Boston to the romantic streets of Rome, from morbidly obese to half her size, from seeking comfort in anything that came cream-filled and two-to-a-pack to finding balance in exquisite (but modest) bowls of handmade pasta. This story is about much more than a woman who loves food and abhors her body. It is about someone who made changes when her situation seemed too far gone and how she discovered balance in an off-kilter world. More than anything, though, it is the story of her finding beauty in acceptance and learning to love all parts of herself.

An excellent journey of a story that's all too real for many of us. As someone with some pounds to lose and the struggle that comes with all that, I felt refreshed and gotten while reading this. Really appreciate her authentic voice.

I‘m the opposite of Andie. I grew up skinny and am an overweight adult. I was a big time restrictor in my teens and 20s and didn‘t enjoy that lifestyle, so I eventually gave up...big time. She felt freer skinny; I feel freer fat. I‘m happy she got out of her unhealthy relationship with food. I‘m glad she‘s found her way to happiness in life. I‘ll be thinking about this one. Thanks for the rec @britt_brooke 💜🎧

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ I related to this so hard. My dad was an alcoholic (now, thankfully recovered for many years) and I‘ve battled food issues my whole adult life. Neither to the extent of Mitchell‘s experiences, but the kinship is there. I appreciate her honesty and respect the hell out her self-discovery and weight-loss journey.

Megabooks How was the audio? Sounds really good! 4y
britt_brooke @Megabooks Good; she narrates it herself. 4y

I appreciated Andie Mitchell's writing - her candor and making herself vulnerable by sharing so intimately of her personal struggles. Her story completely resonated with me all the way through as I've had (and still have) many of the same struggles.

KarouBlue Agreed - well said! P.S. her cookbook is amazing!!! 4y

What difference existed between two and one of anything? Calories, moderation, health - they weren‘t even a consideration of mine. Not then. I didn‘t pause to consider hunger and fullness; I just ate.

I loved this book! Andie was honest about her love of her, her upbringing and how it affected her eating habits, her body and her mental image of herself. It is inspiring and authentic. I would read it again and again! Honestly felt like talking with an old friend about what they've been up to!

This book was pretty good. She narrates it herself and her voice is so soft at times, it was difficult to hear her for me. I definitely want to check out her cookbook!

Two First Impressions:
1. Her descriptions of food are so illustrative I crave rich, chocolatey, pudding like cake and warm, crusty, yeasty rolls with giant pats of butter.
2. Her childhood was unbearably sad. As a granddaughter of an alcoholic, this is harder for me to listen to than expected.

BarbaraTheBibliophage I agree wholeheartedly with both points. 6y

Andie Mitchell struggled with food and her weight growing up. In her 20s she underwent massive lifestyle changes (food, exercise, and therapy) and lost over 130 pounds. But this isn't just a memoir about weight loss. Mitchell shares her life- family, career, friends, love- in such a way that you really come to know her. Mitchell is honest and likeable, and takes accountability for her struggle with food. Definitely a worthwhile audio memoir.

Audio wrapping... or rather audio re-wrapping. Because apparently my cats REALLY want a new set of dishes for Christmas. I guess my mom will be stuck with the catnip mice...

(And this memoir is amazing so far! It's about the author's struggle with food and weight.)

GondorGirl @britt_brooke It's REALLY good. Not pity-inducing or depressing. It manages to be inspiring without being preachy. 6y
GondorGirl @Ash.on.the.line Did the dog at least bake you cupcakes with those oven mitts? 😂 6y
Ash.on.the.line @GondorGirl sadly no! 😂 6y
PenguinInFlight My cat unwrapped the gifts for my Secret Santa at work THREE TIMES last week, the little weasel. He kept finding them no matter where I put them. He would leave them - a pair of socks, a keychain, and an engraved business card holder (along with the paper mess) in the middle of the living room floor like some kind of glorious kill on display. 🤦🏻‍♀️😂 6y

Amazing. I'm listening to the audio version and love the author narrating it. I have so many thoughts about this book. I feel that for the first time someone really "gets me." This is a book I wish I could be brave enough to write.

3.5 out of 5 stars. I listened to this audiobook at the right time so I don't have a lot of negative things to say about it. This is a coming of age memoir about a girl (now a food blogger) who struggled with food addiction. As a young adult, she worked hard to lose 135 lbs but her struggle with food/body image didn't stop there. She discusses family drama, loss, working in the film industry, studying abroad in Italy, and romance OF COURSE.

This is a very quick listen on audio, written by a food blogger who lost 135 lbs. It isn't a self-help book. Just a story of a sad little girl who grew up using food as comfort, love, and friendship, and how she learned to make peace with food and her body. 4 ❤️s

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I just picked this one up, glad to hear it was good! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I listened to this in June and really liked it. A bit too much coming-of-age stuff for me, but the rest was def good. 8y

The author adores food, and it shows in her descriptions. Her relationship with food includes both emotional binge eating and severe restriction. While I appreciated the journey of healing her food addiction, this is only about 30% of the book. The rest is a sad and whiney coming-of-age story.🌟🌟🌟
