Dr. Bloodmoney
Dr. Bloodmoney | Philip K. Dick
6 posts | 10 read | 9 to read
"A masterpiece."Roberto Bolao What happens after the bombs drop? This is the troubling question Philip K. Dick addresses with Dr. Bloodmoney, or How We Got Along After the Bomb. It is the story of a world reeling from the effects of nuclear annihilation and fallout, a world where mutated humans and animals are the norm, and the scattered survivors take comfort from a disc jockey endlessly circling the globe in a broken-down satellite. And hidden amongst the survivors is Dr. Bloodmoney himself, the man responsible for it all. This bizarre cast of characters cajole, seduce, and backstab in their attempts to get ahead in what is left of the world, consequences and casualties be damned. A sort of companion to Dr. Strangelove, an unofficial and unhinged sequel, Dicks novel is just as full of dark comedy and just as chilling.

Title that begins with the letter D
Another letter with numerous potential selections. I very nearly selected Moshfegh's idiosyncratic mystery Death in Her Hands, which I continue to think about often since reading it, Other strong D contenders: Don Quixote, Dud Avocado, Don't Look Now, Drowned World. I finally settled on PKD's sequel of sorts to Dr. Strangelove. Set in a post-apocalyptic landscape the novel follows as humans &👇

vivastory animals have undergone unusual transformations as they attempt to rebuild society. Dr. Strangelove is one of my favorite movies, so when I discovered that PKD had written a sequel, I was immediately intrigued. It does not disappoint! 2y
BarbaraBB I was sure we‘d choose the same book today 😀 2y

batsy Don Quixote and The Dud Avocado were the two I thought about, as well! Along with Death Comes for the Archbishop. All excellent! 2y
vivastory @batsy I added Death Comes for the Archbishop to my bday book shopping list yesterday thanks to the rec. of @graywacke Glad to see your endorsement, too! 2y
JoeMo I‘m glad to see I‘m not the only one struggling to pick one title for some of these letters. For some it seems almost impossible like picking between children or something! 😂 2y
vivastory @JoeMo 😂 There have been letters that I thought would be easier, but when I have looked at my GR account I am reminded of gems I have read. I am also trying to highlight favorites that I haven't posted about quite as much 2y

Pickpick

This is a very strange, but enjoyable book. Dick isn't really interested in plot, or linear storytelling, in his tale of a group of survivors in California after a nuclear war. Time and place jumps around, but the diverse characters makes the book worth reading. 4 💥💥💥💥

Ruthiella I‘ve not read this one, but “Dick isn‘t interested in plot or linear story telling” is an understatement! 😂 2y
Bookwomble I enjoyed this one, too. Since when did life have a coherent plot or move in a straight line? 🤷🏻‍♂️😏 2y

2. Pumpkin Roll
3. Something Wicked This Way Comes. Coincidentally, the carnival arrived in Green Town on my birthday, October 24th.

vivastory I hope you enjoy it. It's a strange, but unforgettable book 2y
RamsFan1963 @vivastory Dick's books always leave me feeling like I've taken some form of hallucinogenic drug, which is why I enjoy them. So far, Dr Bloodmoney has been lots of fun, weird dark and creepy but still fun. 2y

Early in the bright sun-yellowed morning, Stuart McConchie swept the sidewalk before Modern TV Sales & Service, hearing the cars along Shattuck Avenue and the secretaries hurrying on high heels to their offices, all the stirrings and fine smells of a new week, a new time in which a good salesman could accomplish things.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.
