An elegant and evocative novel about people, place and pests by one of South Africas most exciting writers. Katya Grubbs, like her father before her, deals in the unlovely and unloved. Yet in contrast to her father, she is not in the business of pest extermination, but pest relocation. Katyas unconventional approach brings her to the attention of a property developer whose luxury estate on the fringes of Cape Town, Nineveh, remains uninhabited thanks to an infestation of mysterious insects. As Katya is drawn ever deeper into the chaotic urban wilderness of Nineveh, she must confront unwelcome intrusions from her own past.

Book mail today! I've been eyeing these novels for a while and am excited to read them. My mom had asked what to get me for Christmas and I suggested the November subscription from Unnamed Press. Two books and ebooks for $20, includes shipping. A great deal that also supports a small press! Here's the link to their subscriptions if you're interested: http://www.unnamedpress.com/subscriptions

So I started this ARC and am 22% through it and it's giving me so much anxiety! I am not a big reader of thrillers or horror and it feels like its veering into that territory. So my question to all you readers- what's the proper protocol? Is it better to stop reading now if it's likely that I won't like it because it's not my genre or do I continue because I want to support new books and be respectful that I was given an e-galley to read? Halp!

Notafraidofwords If the book is giving you anxiety and making you feel uncertain, I would definitely bail. 7y
ThatBookishGal Don't waste your time on something if u aren't enjoying it! There's so many other books out there that I'm sure u would rather be reading 7y
HardcoverHearts @Notafraidofwords , @ThatBookishGal - in my own personal reading, I dump and run without guilt. But being new to the accepted behavior for reading advanced reader copies and galleys, I wasn't sure if people normally suffer through or if it's better to not finish but also not pan it. I'm grateful for being given the advanced copy but I also don't want to be bound by it and resentful. Still trying to figure out the rules of the galley game. 7y

Notafraidofwords @HardcoverHearts oh I see. But I don't think one book will make a difference. 7y
Lindy You could read the ending to reduce your anxiety and also to see if it is your kind of book after all. I know people who read for enjoyment who read the end first, but as a potential reviewer of an ARC, your reading responsibility makes it more important to give this one a fair shake. After reading the end, if you decide it isn't for you and you don't want to read further, just let the publisher know that. 7y
ReadingEnvy In general, publishers are looking for honest feedback. If you stop, still tell them what you thought. Why wasn't it for you? I think this is way more useful than a false glowing review. 7y
PatienceFortitude Agree with @ReadingEnvy Honest reviews are important. Every book has its reader. Articulating what isn't working for you will help readers who have similar tastes, or completely opposite tastes. 7y
PatienceFortitude When I hate a review book, I use a lot of language like "this book will appeal to fans of....." (something in the book that ties to style or genre) 7y
HardcoverHearts @Lindy , @ReadingEnvy , @PatienceFortitude - those are great ideas! Thank you so much for the advice. 7y
ReadingEnvy I should add that I usually say thank you for the opportunity and use "not for me" language... MOST of the time. Recently I wrote a poetry review that used the words "worst I've ever read" and "should not have been published" and "offensive...." Suffice to say it was awful and I gave them my "honest opinion." 7y

Pickpick

Set in Cape Town, South Africa. As a pest control expert, Katya Grubbs knows there's always something lurking under the surface. About the futility of keeping everything in its proper place & appreciating change. It was more descriptive than I typically read, but I loved the strangeness and complexity of the story. One of those I like more as I think about it. For anyone who likes strange, character-driven stories with atmospheric settings.

charl08 So creepy crawly. I wouldn't have said I was that bothered by insects but this book... 7y
vivastory I will be so happy when the election is over. I feel like I've lost too much quality reading time keeping up with the insanity of 2016 politics. 7y
