Hold Still: A Novel | Lynn Steger Strong
8 posts | 9 read | 20 to read
For fans of Celeste Ngs Everything I Never Told You, a gripping and heartfelt family portrait from an achingly precise new voice. Evoking finely wrought characters reminiscent of those by Claire Messud or Elizabeth Strout, debut author Lynn Steger Strong traces the anatomy of a mistake and the weight of culpability. When Maya Taylor, an English professor with a tendency to hide in her books, sends her daughter to Florida to look after a friends child, she does so with the best of intentions; its a chance for Ellie, twenty and spiraling, to rebuild her life. But Ellie fears shell only disappoint again, and in the sprawling hours of one humid afternoon, she makes a mistake that she cant take back. In two separate timelinesbefore and after the catastropheMaya and Ellie must try to repair their fractured relationship and find a way to transcend not only their differences but also their more troubling similarities. Heralding the arrival of a profoundly moving new talent, Hold Still explores the depths and limits of a mothers love.

It wasn't really my thing. It was ok, but it just didn't connect with me too well. I feel like some parts went on forever. The writing just felt strange to me.

The struggle and sometimes failure at being a parent, a functioning grown child or a happy individual. Stark, concise, with gorgeous language. For readers of Jenny Offill, Lydia Davis or Jesse Ball.

A beautiful, devastating book centered on the relationship between a mother and daughter before and after a traumatic event. The writing is so well and carefully crafted. It's a short novel that you want to read slowly. Lots of real and true here.

A sneakily haunting, tragic debut novel. I absolutely loved it, despite the fact that it slowly broke my heart! Truly beautifully written--I can't wait for more to come from Lynn in the future.
