Behind the Palace Doors
Behind the Palace Doors: Five Centuries of Sex, Adventure, Vice, Treachery, and Folly from Royal Britain | Michael Farquhar
4 posts | 5 read | 13 to read
Spanning 500 years of British history, a revealing look at the secret lives of some great (and not-so-great) Britons, courtesy of one of the world’s most engaging royal historians Beleaguered by scandal, betrayed by faithless spouses, bedeviled by ambitious children, the kings and queens of Great Britain have been many things, but they have never been dull. Some sacrificed everything for love, while others met a cruel fate at the edge of an axman’s blade. From the truth behind the supposed madness of King George to Queen Victoria’s surprisingly daring taste in sculpture, Behind the Palace Doors ventures beyond the rumors to tell the unvarnished history of Britain’s monarchs, highlighting the unique mix of tragedy, comedy, romance, heroism, and incompetence that has made the British throne a seat of such unparalleled fascination. Featuring: • stories covering every monarch, from randy Henry VIII to reserved Elizabeth II • historical myths debunked and surprising “Did you know . . . ?” anecdotes • four family trees spanning every royal house, from the Tudors to the Windsors From the Trade Paperback edition.

Starting the #24in48 readathon! I'm not doing a shelfie with myself in it, my eyes are too red after saying bye to my college kids as they start the spring semester. Not only that my Facebook reminded me that today was my late dog's birthday and there were pictures of him and the kids over the years 😭. In fact I'm crying again now. This readathon will help distract me! Keeping track like this b/c last time my stopwatch attempts messed up.

Annl Sending you a hug! 7y
Hobbinol Aw! Sounds like someone needs to read in a hot, happy bubble bath. 💙💙💙: some blue hearts for you... 7y

George II and his wife hated their eldest son with a great passion. Poor Fretz! Just speechless 😶 reading about the Hanovers here. Seems like they have been overlooked for TV drama series potential! #royals

8little_paws This whole page. The drama! 7y
AmandaL What? Now I need to know why they hated him so much!! 7y

lynneamch Speaking of TV series, I am so hooked on The Royals on E! television in the US. Looks like it's watchable on-line. Crazy good!🖒 7y
ValerieAndBooks @8little_paws @AmandaL @Donna_sBookMinute @britt_brooke I know right! It seems that the parents were resentful and jealous of Frederick...he was more popular with the public and didn't have to be as duty-bound. Must find a book that focuses more on this! @lynneamch I really need to look into that series! 7y

I love books about #royals and actually am reading this right now at son's music lessons. Not as much sex as the subtitle implies (as its listed first) but more about good summaries of what was controversial about each reign. Later tonight will show you all a pic of my collection on #royals!

LeahBergen I read his Royal Scandals. It was fun! 7y
rustoryhuf I read anything I can about Henry VIII and is wives. Hubby is related to 3 of his women, plus QEI. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen I'm definitely looking for it now! I see he has also written a few other books in a similar vein! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @rustoryhuf that's cool about your husband being related to the Tudor branch! I'm descended from royalty too -- the Plantagenets -- funny thing is that my aunt found that out well after I was already interested in royal history! 7y
