The book On My Honor by Marion Bauer is about two boys named Tony and Joel who go on a bike ride to a remote state park to climb rock cliffs. Joel has no interest in going on this dangerous adventure, but Tony insisted they still go. Joel becomes frightened when, midway through the trip, when Tony suggests that they swim in a rapidly moving river.

olivia_danko Tony suddenly disappears in the rapid water and Joel is stuck confronting his parents and Tony's parents about the horrible news. He soon learns, however, that one cannot escape truth and reality.
This realistic fiction and award-winning Newbery book would be best taught using UDL 3.2 (Highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas,
and relationships) since this book is about friendship, honesty, and dealing with grief, I believe it would
3y
olivia_danko be beneficial to do a literature circle and discuss these difficult big ideas that happen in the book.
The ELS strategy I'd use is EL 2 (promote cooperation in small groups).
With the following lesson has a reading journal that students can take notes on and fill out as they read:

DrSpalding Your summary brought back the sadness I felt when reading this book to my sons. I do think it would be an excellent book to include in a fifth grade book club. The themes in this book are real world and not following the rules can lead to horrible consequences! Excellent resource attached. 3y

On My Honor by Marion Dane Bauer is a Newberry Honor winning novel about a young boy, Joel, who learns through a devastating lesson that honesty is crucial. When Joel and his best friend Tony arrive at a large cliff, dare devil Tony suggests they climb it. Not wanting to be viewed as a “coward” Joel suggests they swim across a treacherous river instead, thinking it would be safer than the cliff climbing. Joel reaches the other side of the river

emilypalkovich only to see Tony has disappeared. Joel fails to find his friend in the rough waters and keeps the secret to himself until there is no other option but to tell the truth. This realistic fiction story would be best if used for dramatic reenactment because it would help get the message that the book is trying to teach across: the importance of honesty. A website resource for re-enacting this book would be 3y
emilypalkovich https://www.jstor.org/stable/20201167?seq=1#metadata_info_tab... because it describes how to motivate a dramatic story reenactment. A UDL principle for this could be to provide options for expression and communication since it is a more intense topic. A EL strategy that would be beneficial here is number nine: teach note-taking strategies because it is a longer book which requires full understanding and building off of previous information. 3y
PatriciaS Great review 👍 thanks for this wonderful addition to teach children life lessons with great resource activities. Comprehension is gained through book clubs and literary circles discussion sessions questions and answers small groupings and independent reading assignments too. I will be adding this wonderful book to my list. 3y
DrSpalding When Tony disappears… Yikes! Students will not want you to stop reading. Yes this could be a dramatic reenactment however an after lunch or specials read aloud to discuss how important it is to follow rules, maybe even better. 3y

On My Honor is a Newbery honor recipient. In this heartbreaking tale, Joel struggles with his need to please his father and wanting to impress his best friend. He soon discovers there are consequences to his actions, and sometimes rules are there for a reason. In this short but impactful text, your students will be holding on to the edge of their seat until the end. This is a great text to use as a RA or in a LC.

⭐⭐⭐⭐
I just listened to this1986 #Newbery Honor book for the first time. It was such a tragic story with hard life lessons. According to what I read on the internet, it was based on true events which makes it even sadder.
I thought I remembered watching this on an ABC Afterschool special, when I was a kid. Does anyone else remember that? I couldn't find it on YouTube, I wanted to watch it again. #MiddleGradeMay @SaturnDoo @megnews

marleed I used to read tween books with my daughter and chose the Newberry books because if she liked them they‘d still be around for her kids. We sure read a lot of dead tween books! I‘d cry. My daughter would laugh at me - not a cryer! 5y
Peddler410 This is one that had stayed with me forever. I was in middle school when it came out and read it at that time. 5y
megnews I had not heard of this. How sad. 5y

On My Honor by Marion Dane Bauer is a great RF and won a Newbery Honor award and would be a great IR. This books is about two boys who are close friends, who decided to bike to a state park to climb rocks despite it being dangerous. On the way to the state park, the boys stop at a river and gets a crazy idea to go swimming in it, even though their parents have warned them numerous of times about rivers being dangerous.

JayaJ This book shows the uncensored truth of what can potentially happen when you do not listen to parents. UDL 2.3, support deciding if text, mathematical notation, and symbols and EL 1, teach questioning for clarification would go great with this book. Here is a great lesson on character development that can be used with this book http://www.readwritethink.org/classroom-resources/lesson-plans/bright-morning-ex... (edited) 6y
DrSpalding I‘m so glad you read this book and wished we had an opportunity to discuss it. Character development would be an excellent lesson with this particular book. 6y

This book was not only #heartwrenching, but traumatizing. I distinctly remember not crying because of the shock it produced in me. I absolutely refuse to read it again. I couldn‘t possibly survive it.

This sad heart-wrenching story On my Honor by Marion Dane Bauer a Realistic Fiction(RF) novel is a Newbery Honor Book. This novel will take anyone through several different emotions. There are these two Boys, who are doing what any two boy do when they get together to have fun. A risky adventurous swim in a dangerous river takes a turn for the worse.

Hervela.L Joel has to live with a guilty conscious because of the choices he has made against his promise of honor. Because of the book content I would suggest this book for 3th- 5th grade. Teaching strategy SR, IR, and LC. UDL 3.4 maximize transfer and generalization & ESOL 7. strategies show students how to use graphic organizer like semantic mapping and imagining. DrSpalding After pitching this realistic fiction novel in class, I got two of you to read it! It is heart wrenching however a powerful book that will engage your middle grade students. Well done. 6y
LisaMart @Hervela.L Aren‘t you glad I persuaded you to read that? Tell the truth...you cried, right? I felt Joel‘s panic, and wondered what I would do in that situation. In the end, I just couldn‘t imagine how devastating it would be to lose a friend, let alone my BEST friend! So sad! Great post! You rock! 6y
Hervela.L @LisaMart yes I am glad! I plead the fifth about crying, I just felt for him at the end when he was in such a panic. I couldn't imagine how Joel felt when his dad came to console him. (edited) 6y
LisaMart @Hervela.L It feels incomplete though! There needs to be another chapter to tell us what happened!! 6y
Hervela.L @LisaMart I feel the same way. How did he cope? How did the dad cope? What happen with the other family? 6y

What a tearjerker! This heartbreaking RF, Newbery award winning book by Marion Dane Bauer will leave you emotional and wanting to know more. The narrator, Joel, is a teenaged boy who defies a promise made to his father, and, in doing so loses his best friend, Tony. Now, Joel must face the guilt and consequences of the decision both boys made that day, alone. This book deals with a very realistic tragedy; the loss of a friend.

LisaMart This novel could be used for IR and could also be impactful as a PR for grades 6-8. The attached link offers some great discussion questions and also gives ideas for projects, such as, my favorite, write your own chapter 13 as whatever you wish to happen next. You have to read it to understand, and I don‘t want to give any spoilers, because I truly believe that everyone should check this book out! UDL: 2.3, 5.3, & 8.3 EL: 6, 12, 22, 32, & 44 (edited) 6y
V.DeQuattro This book is on my list to read! I‘m really excited to read it. I really liked the link that you attached. The idea to add a chapter 13 to the end of the book sounds so interesting. Super cool idea to get students thinking about what they have read and how they can add to it! 6y

DrSpalding Lisa, as I mentioned in class, a fourth-grade teacher introduced me to this title. She reads it to her students at the end of every year. Poor choices can lead to disaster. Realistic fiction is realistic and life isn‘t always happy! Much like my own boys, the students in her classroom year after year are itching for more of this book. Excellent job using the author‘s website. Wonderful post. 6y
LisaMart @V.DeQuattro You should definitely read this! The idea of having the students write a chapter 13 will make so much more sense, and as a teacher I‘d be eager to read what they come up with! Thank you for the response! 6y
LisaMart @drspalding I was wondering which grade level you mentioned read this book in class. I was debating which grade level this book would be most appropriate for, and in the end I went with what Book Wizard recommended. I‘m actually hoping to teach 4th or 5th so I will definitely keep this book in mind for the future. Thank you! 6y

#ucflae3414f17 I'm on my way back to Orlando after spending the weekend at home, and I just read the Newbery award winning book On My Honor by Marion Dane Bauer. While it was not an uplifting story, this RF book contains some very important life lessons that all children should be exposed to; the importance of safety, telling the truth, standing your ground, and swallowing your pride at times. The ending of this book is devastating, however

Juliemorell the lessons it provides make it worth the read, and a great addition to the classroom library. This book could be great as a RA or SR, and this link will take you to an awesome guide for using the book in the classroom. https://www.teachercreated.com/products/a-guide-for-using-on-my-honor-in-the-cla... Some classroom activities from the guide that I liked in particular are writing a letter to or from a character, and creating a prediction 7y
Juliemorell for what would happen after the story ended. The EL strategy I would use with this book is #15, reinforcing key ideas and presenting them again and again. The lesson presented in this story could relate to people of all cultures, and I feel that by reiterating the purpose of the story the EL will have an easier time connecting. 7y
Juliemorell The UDL strategy I would use with this book is 3.2, highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships. I feel it is very important for students to understand the usual behavior of the characters and the relationships between them. 7y
DrSpalding Your EL/UDL principles are spot on. I am thrilled you read this book and the ending is devastating. I believe it would make for an excellent read aloud in your intermediate classroom. I read the book due to a fourth-grade teacher saying that she read it every year to her students. 7y
Juliemorell @DrSpalding Thank you dr. Spalding! While not a happy ending, the lessons within it are valuable! 6y
