Had some weird downtime moments this morning, so I picked up a book I read a few years ago and reread what I highlighted to refresh my memory on the content.

1. As long as I can remember, so about age 5. �

2. Mixing it up from my usual recommendations. It‘s a big election year in America, and this book is an exploration into the nuances of modern racism and how it plays out in elections and political campaigns.

Lopez does an incredible job of getting across the nuances of contemporary racism, and the conscious political strategies that rely on coded racial appeals...Dog Whistle politics. He also adeptly disputes the idea that we are in either a colorblind or post-racial time, with a ton of research and footnotes to back up all of his arguments. I highly recommend it for everyone.

My child attends CMS, the district in the 1971 Swann v CharlotteBOE decision. A district that has again become segregated since a 1999 ruling ordered CMS to stop using race in student assignment. The district went from a nationally recognized example of integrated schools, to once again stratified by race and income. I was amazed in the last BOE election when the 1971 case & "forced bussing" was still used by GOP candidates to fuel paranoia.

The kid is playing Magic at the local comic book shop, and hubby is on call, so I am spending this lovely Friday evening with sushi, a glass of wine, a good book, and the documentary 13th. ���📚

"Like most, I had been conditioned to think of racism as hatred, and racists as pathologically disturbed individuals."

Growing up in a loving family that also has quite a few veiled racist beliefs, and with parents who still don't realize those views are problematic, this is something I continually struggle with.

So far, the author is doing an excellent job of articulating the nuances of modern racism. It's an important and timely read.

My latest #bookhaul!! I'm definitely in the mood for non-fiction pool side reading this summer! The Maria Semple book was my prize for completing the library's summer reading program. �I have already read Adichie's short essay, which one would you suggest I pick up next?

Wow!! It is frightening how dead on this book is.

It is terrifying how history repeats itself.

Starting this book for an online political book club I joined. I hear it's very interesting!
