Collected Poems
Collected Poems | W B Yeats
6 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 1 to read
As well as being one of the major literary figures of the twentieth century and the recipient of the 1923 Nobel Prize for Literature, William Butler Yeats (1865-1939) is the greatest lyric poet that Ireland has produced. His early work includes the beguiling 'When You are Old', 'The Cloths of Heaven' and 'The Lake Isle of Innisfree' but, unusually for a poet, Yeats's later works, including 'Parnell's Funeral', surpass even those of his youth. All are present in this volume, which reproduces the 1933 edition of W. B. Yeats's Collected Poems and also contains an illuminating introduction by author and academic Dr Robert Mighall. Designed to appeal to the booklover, the Macmillan Collector's Library is a series of beautiful gift editions of much loved classic titles. Macmillan Collector's Library are books to love and treasure.

PatienceFortitude This poem reminds me of my dad and my great aunt. It was one of the poems that she would recite from memory. and he would chime in. I should work on getting it committed to memory so he and I can recite it 5y
TiredLibrarian @PatienceFortitude I love that. I think memorizing poetry is less common now, and we miss out on experiencing it in a whole different way. 5y

#irish #poetrymatters
My grandad lost his leg in the Easter 1916 rising, crushed by a British Army horse.
I was brought up in a very mixed up Irish/English family environment!!

Libby1 Wow, @TrishB . How sad. There‘s so much I could learn from you. ❤️ 6y
TrishB @Libby1 I didn‘t know anything about it until one of my cousins tried to join the forces in the late 70s and was turned down and at the time it was because my grandad was considered an IRA sympathiser (or more) from 1916 even though he‘d been dead 20years! Family secrets eh....my dad was English and an atheist. My mum was Irish and a catholic...we had every intolerance in our household!! 6y
Caroline2 @TrishB blimey Trish! That‘s an interesting family secret to find out! I‘m fascinated by Irish history. I wonder what your grandad thought of your dad marrying your mum then??? My great grandad was German and married a Jewish lady; it caused quite the stir!!!! 😬 (they ran away to England!) 6y
TrishB @Caroline2 my Mum and Dad were a scandal to both families!! 6y
