The Ape Who Guards the Balance
The Ape Who Guards the Balance | Elizabeth Peters
10 posts | 25 read | 2 to read
Prospects for the 1907 archaeological season in Egypt are looking somewhat dull to Amelia. As a result of Emerson's less-than-diplomatic behaviour, they have been demoted to examining only the most boring tombs in the Valley of the Kings - mere leftovers, really. And then, in a seedy section of Cairo, the younger members of the Peabody Emerson clan purchase a mintcondition papyrus of the famed Book of the Dead, the collection of magical spells and prayers designed to ward off the perils of the underworld and lead the deceased into everlasting life. But for as long as there have been graves, there have also been grave robbers - and so begins a new adventure into antiquity. The season rapidly switches from dull to deadly as Amelia strives to untangle a web woven of criminals and cults, stolen treasures and fallen women - all the while under the unblinking eye of a ruthless, remorseless killer.

The Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters is about as close to romance as I can get. 😂 I‘m using this title for the “Hearts and Flowers” prompts for the February #RoaringWolf Reading Challenge, since it did contain a sweet romance amid the murder, adventure and comedy. The Emersons are back in Luxor and the specter of The Master Criminal (not so dead after all maybe?) arises to haunt the family and their archeological adventures.

CarolynM *There is no mention of this visit in Manuscript H. The editor spent many hours searching for it in vain. 🤣🤣🤣 2y

These are my two #Roll100 books for February 2022. I‘m fairly sure I will manage the Elizabeth Peters‘ title. Crossing my fingers I can also swing the NK Jemisin. 🤞😬

CarolynM Oooh!! The Ape Who Guards the Balance is a really good one, and it features my favourite footnote ever🤣 Enjoy! 2y
Ruthiella @CarolynM You intrigue me! 😃 I‘m super interested to see how the second generation develop since that was a big part of the last book. 2y

I always enjoy Amelia Peabody's narrative voice but it's been a while since I've read some of these so I didn't always get the references to earlier instalments - especially as the footnotes were missing from this edition.

No one waltzes more magnificently than Emerson; the only problem is that he insists on waltzing no matter what sort of music is being played.

I love listening to these audiobooks. The narrator does a great job with the different voices. I slept longer than I intended to, but am ready to devote the day to the printed (or recorded) word!
