Bridge of Clay | Markus Zusak
post image

‘Five Dunbar brothers are living- fighting, loving, grieving- in the perfect chaos of a house without grown-ups. Today the father who left them has just walked right back in. He has a surprising request: who will build a bridge with him? It is Clay, a boy tormented by a long -buried secret, who accepts. But why is Clay so broken? And why must he fulfil this extraordinary challenge?‘

I won this ARC pack from PRH, and I can‘t wait to get reading!

The English Patient | Michael Ondaatje
post image

The final curtain is closing on the Second World War and in an abandoned Italian village Hana, a nurse, tends to her remaining patient. Rescued from a burning plane, the anonymous Englishman is damaged beyond recognition and haunted by painful memories. The only clue Hana has to unlocking his past is the one thing he clung on to through the fire- a copy of The Histories by Herodotus, covered with hand-written notes detailing a tragic love affair.

Sing, Unburied, Sing | Jesmyn Ward
post image
Pickpick

Sing, Unburied, Sing, is a character study of a contemporary African-American family in Mississippi, but also a hauntingly beautiful story about ghosts. In the literal and figurative sense. Raising issues of race, death and extreme family dynamics are prominent features, but its brightness is obtained from the author's overwhelming empathy for her characters, even at their worst. None of them are perfect, but simply human.

Outlander: A Novel | Diana Gabaldon
post image
Pickpick

Gabaldon has crafted a novel that is different to the stereotype some readers might be expecting, as this is no average love story despite the racy sex scenes. However, it does have extreme sexual violence that readers should be aware of. Her characters have depth, are lovable, and realistic. There‘s non-stop drama and action until the last 200 pages, where it all comes to a stand-still. Despite this it was a very enjoyable read.
