It's bananas to me that it took so long for me to read this, and yet reading it for the first time now felt so poignant. This book knocked my socks off and I feel like it's changed the way I see the world. Isn't it incredible that books have that power?

Read this. So poignant and I am, once again, blown away by Orwell. It's so impressively written. And if you listen to the audiobook on 1.25x speed (it's read somewhat slowly), it's the length of a couple of podcasts.

What a fun and unexpected little book. I really enjoyed this.

Basically I want to quote the entire afterword. It is incredible what people can do when they come together.

This book had a big impact on me as a kid. I remember some parts so vividly. It was wonderful to revisit it, and felt rather poignant.

So impressed with this book. The way the story is told is fascinating. It moves forward and doubles back to reveal new elements. It's just lovely and I highly recommend. My first graphic novel!

My first time reading this. OOF. (Recommend the audiobook, btw. It's my preferred medium for classics. And this is only three hours!)

Pick, with caveats. Great, light read. A beach book. Some suspension of disbelief required. Prepare to roll your eyes at some light sexism and some somewhat, uh, old-fashioned values. Still, I enjoyed this and it was just what I needed after heavy nonfiction. 💁🏻

This. This is why Charlaine Harris's books will never be perfect for me. Latent (blatant?) sexism. 'She's good at the job plus she's beautiful, so you know she'll do fine.' In other places, we are expected to admire the main character's husband for doing the dishes. In one scene he dotes on her because she is pregnant and ill, then leaves her to make dinner for him moments later. HOKAY. Do better, Harris.

Scary. Important. Required reading. Do your homework: read this book.

Loving this and sad it can't go on forever! Kristen Bell reads the audiobook and it's like having #VeronicaMars on my tv again.

The only book I gave up on in 2016. I wanted so badly for this book to live up to the hype. I gave up with an hour or so left of the audio (to be fair, it's only a four hour book). It just didn't hold my attention and I found my mind constantly wandering. I'll have to settle for loving a few of the quotes.

Rowing and reading: my two obsessions! One of my favorite books ever

The story is still so well-written, and the characters and events so perfectly interwoven. At some point I realized I was reading over and over about the same people, rowing the same races, in the same places. How could that possibly continue to be interesting? And yet!
I cheered for them all, I felt like I was part of their world, I cried at the end. Read it.

Always the first audiobooks I recommend; never get old re-reading. I read at least one a year, whether print or audio. Feels especially poignant lately.

Here, Larson seems far too quick to dismiss Dodd's anti-Semitism--to say the least. Dodd & family are shown to be anti-Semitic throughout the book thus far, & Larson has just explained that Dodd was falsely told Messersmith was Jewish. Meek Dodd admits Messersmith is competent but suddenly wants to oust him for (at least in part) his zealous warnings about Hitler and Nazi Germany, but it has "little to do" with his anti-Semitism? Not buying it.

I just started the audiobook and already have a lump in my throat. Dementia of a parent is personal to me and so I both slightly dread and look forward to reading this book. 💗
