This was an emotional read but I love a book that makes you react and think long after you've finished. Lots of thinking about ethics and what would you do if you were in this unusual situation. Very original.

I've just finished the set and am so sad. I loved these characters and the families that were woven together in complex ways. Even after 3,000 pages I didn't want it to end. Fabulous integration of history and fiction.

Great storytelling! Moves back and forth between present day and life in late 1800's. Tells the story of how the past and present protagonists are connected. Also tells about lives of Chinese immigrants during this time, which is painfully moving.

Just read this through twice. Beautiful characters and the writing was just lovely. Story of a couple who is connected for life but many surprises throughout. "We are all born happy. Life gets us dirty along the way but we can clean it up."
