This is a very unique book with the illustrations. It physically shows the pigs leaving the story and walking through/ past other ones. This would be a good book to read to upper elementary students as they know the classic tales that are referenced in the cross-stories. While they follow the journey of the pigs. Until they finally get back into their own story with more friends.

“The Three Pigs“ by David Wiesner is a Caldecott Award Winning Book in 2002. The illustrations in this book take the three pigs out of the story while walking past other book pages. As they travel through other stories they make friends. Once back in their own story, their friends from the other stories, are shown coming through the book pages to help protect them from the big bad wolf.

This book would be great for exploring all of the different tales of the three pigs, and could even be used to have a conversation about traveling outside of what you know to find appreciation from others different than yourself.

This book is a fun twist on a classic story. It starts out as your basic tale of the three pigs and ends in friendships created through the blending of other clastic tales, including the cat and the fiddle and a dragon. Great way to bring some new entertain with an oldie.

The Three Pigs by David Wiesner is a Caldecott award winning book! This MF book is Davis spinoff of the Traditional Literature story The Three Little Pigs. This book starts off as the normal story of The Three Little Pigs, but takes an adventure through many other Traditional Literature books. In the end, they all join to live in one story. #ucflae3414sp21

tclivio This would go great with UDL 3.1 (activate or supply background knowledge) as well as EL 45 (use Venn diagrams to contrast and compare activities). This would be great to use to compare with the original story. http://maeganrasmussen.weebly.com/uploads/1/1/7/2/11727042/lessonplan1.pdf This is also such a cute activity to have students create their own house for the pigs! 3y
emilypalkovich Great post! I love the activity you linked. I will definitely consider using this in my classroom one day! This book looks so cute and it‘s always fun reading someone‘s take on a classic story. 3y
DrSpalding So I am guessing that you were inspired by your resource for your own storytelling! You did this very well and we were impressed by your props. This is a very different version of the original story! Universal design 3.1 and English learner 45 would work well to compare the original story with this as you put it, spin off. 3y

I‘ll huff and i‘ll puff and i‘ll blow your house in!!! Oh no! This TL picture book by David Wiesner is also a Caldecott winner! This book is the perfect RA book about the 3 little pigs and is told with its own special twist. This can be a great time to tell your students that this classic tale has many different versions as well! #ucflae3414su20

bsiqueira https://www.reading.ecb.org/teacher/pdfs/lesson/syn_Ip_3Pigs.pdf This website provides such an amazing lesson on Synthesizing with The Three Pigs! You are able to read a few version of the traditional piece and describe how the author may have changed the story. A UDL strategy that would be good is 3.1 “Activate background knowledge” on the story. ESOL #15 “Reinforce the key ideas you present again and again.” 4y
DrSpalding You obviously like this author. You should perform an author study! This is certainly a very different version than students are familiar with. They could compare and contrast a variety of versions to aid comprehension. 4y

Personally, I love the idea of the piggies breaking out of their story and creating their own ending. A lot of pages would encourage questions with your little one, like, “oh my gosh, what are they doing!?” 😊😊😊 It isn‘t easy to take a tried-and-true tale and reinvent it & I think that‘s where Wiesner is successful 36/1,001 #1001ChildrensBooks

Before I read this to my class, I probably would read the original three little pigs story first, just to make sure they are familiar with the story. Without knowing the original story, kids may be very confused.

“The Three Pigs“ by David Wiesner, 2001. This is one of the books we read in class, and I really enjoyed it! I thought it was a fun twist on the traditional story of the little pigs. The pigs come out of the book to escape the wolf! The illustrations definitely extend the story, because you visually see the pigs popping out of the frame.

This is a fun and different spin on the three little pigs. This traditional literature book would have students engaged from the begging. The illustrations are fun and help extend the story with their detail. The plot is simple and direct which makes it easy to follow along.

I would use this in a classroom because you could read the original three pigs story, and then read this book to show students that there are different variations of stories. Also, once they know the basics of the story, they will be engaged in the new one because they will compare both books.

This book was about the traditional story of the three pigs, but with a twist where the pigs travel to different stories. This is traditional literature because the plot is simple and effective, and this book is a twist on an original folktale source. The illustrations added to the story because the illustrations were most of the story. There were not many words to this story.

KevinKantola The UDL strategy I would use is EDL 1.3, offer alternatives for visual information, by creating a storytelling presentation for the students. The ESOL strategy that I will be using is 14: Simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant. 4y
kgarzon I love your idea of providing more visual cues via storytelling! It would not only aid EL students in following the storyline, but also engage the class as a whole. 4y
DrSpalding Your universal design principles and English learner strategies continue to work nicely with the teaching strategy and resources you have selected. You know how to align these principles and strategies with great books! 4y

The Three Pigs, a TL is written and illustrated by David Wiesner and is a Caldecott Medalist. Three pigs have built their houses out of the different materials: straw, sticks and bricks. The first two pigs make fun of the third pig for using brick because it takes him longer to build his house. However, when a wolf comes ready to huff and puff to eat the pigs, which house will remain standing? This book would be great for a RT. #UCFLAE3414F19

JRone UDL strategy 4.1 Vary the methods for response and navigation would align with this book because you can have children create their own reader's theatre plays to go along with it. If they don't want to use a reader's theatre, they can use other methods like storytelling to retell the story. ESOL #6 Continually monitor students‘ comprehension will be beneficial to the students to see how they are following along with the story. 4y
JRone The lesson plan https://www.teachingbooks.net/content/Wiesner_activity_guide.pdf allows children to get into an in-depth discussion about the book. It also uses compare and contrast strategies to compare this version of The Three Pigs to other versions of it. 4y
DrSpalding This is a traditional literature variant. You are correct that this would make a wonderful storytelling along with a read aloud. This version is quite different and would be excellent for comparing and contrasting. 4y

The three pigs by David Wiesner is the 2002 Caldecott award winner. This is such a fun twist on a classic tale. The story starts out how we all know it but then the pigs jump off the page ( which makes for some really cool and captivating illustrations) and into other stories. The whole thing gets really silly and is a great read for kids.

The Three Pigs by David Wiesner, 2001. Caldecott Award Winning Book. I really enjoyed this twist on the original story of The Three Little Pigs. The author is very creative in how the pigs escaped the wolf! The illustrations do a great job at delivering how the pigs are escaping the story by leaving the pages and entering other tales! Great way to introduce traditional literature! I loved it!

Award: Caldecott
Review: This book is a new twist on the story The Three Little Pigs. It chronicles the journey of three pigs leaving home and battling the big bad wolf. Then the book takes a turn when the pigs leave the book and start exploring other fairy tales. It‘s a very different book that young children would need to understand the original little three pigs before they understand this book.
