Mango, Abuela, and Me
Mango, Abuela, and Me | Meg Medina
5 posts | 9 read | 2 to read
When a little girls far-away grandmother comes to stay, love and patience transcend language in a tender story written by acclaimed author Meg Medina. Mias abuela has left her sunny house with parrots and palm trees to live with Mia and her parents in the city. The night she arrives, Mia tries to share her favorite book with Abuela before they go to sleep and discovers that Abuela cant read the words inside. So while they cook, Mia helps Abuela learn English ("Dough. Masa"), and Mia learns some Spanish too, but its still hard for Abuela to learn the words she needs to tell Mia all her stories. Then Mia sees a parrot in the pet-shop window and has the perfectoidea for how to help them all communicate a little better. An endearing tale from an award-winning duo that speaks loud and clear about learning new things and the love that bonds family members.

#lae3414sp19 “Mango, Abuela, and Me” is a Belpré Honor (RF) picture book written by Meg Medina and illustrated by Angela Dominguez. This book tells the sweet story of an American child helping her newly-immigrated, Spanish-speaking grandmother adjust to her new life in America. This would be a great AS, as it‘s based on the authors real-life experience with her own grandmother!

wmaxflowers A good lesson plan for this book would be extension activity number 2 from this lesson plan via ADL‘s Education Division: https://www.adl.org/sites/default/files/documents/assets/pdf/education-outreach/.... This lesson plan fulfills UDL principle 7.1 and ESOL principle 24, as the lesson encourages students to focus-in and learn about their own individual cultures. (edited) 5y

This is a RF RA Pura Belprè honor book and a great book for ESOL students. A girls grandmother comes to live with her family in the city from far away where she had parrots and palm trees. The problem is, they cannot understand each other because they speak different languages. They get to know each other‘s languages and the girl gets her Grandmother a parrot, named mango, to remind her of her home.

Brittanyradzak This would be great with UDL principle 2.4 and ESOL strategy 24 to embrace the culture and situations that ELL may have in their life. https://www.adl.org/sites/default/files/documents/assets/pdf/education-outreach/... this is a great resource that helps students explore other cultures, and it even includes an activity to learn another language! #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 6y
DrSpalding What a resource from an unlikely source. ESOL strategy 24 is just right. Several peers have read this book too. Was it highlighted in the CMC? 6y
Teresaj I would love to read this book! Definitely plan to read 6y
supan.katherine Really love the resource you found for the book. I️ think it‘s really important for students to learn about different cultures. Great post! 6y

Mango, Abuela, and Me, by Meg Medina/illustrated by Angela Dominguez, is a RF picture book about a young girl and her Spanish speaking grandmother who have much to say to each other, but no clue how to say it. Maybe Mango, a parrot, can be a solution to their communication barrier, Mango and a lot of practice. This Pura Belpré Honor book would make a wonderful RA or GR.

AshleyAA The provided lesson plan can be incorporated in classrooms PreK–5 and can meet UDL principles 2.1, 7.2, and 3.1 that relate to clarifying vocabulary, optimizing relevance and value, and activating background knowledge. In addition, it can also meet EL 20 and 24 that relate to listing important words and phrases on the board where students can reference back to and incorporating culture and language of second language learners.

AshleyAA @DrSpalding Yes, she is my grandmother. I made many personal connections with this book as I faced the exact challenge with my grandmother when I was younger. 6y
