From being told to be something that she is wasn't, to changing the world, Katie Casey was a symbol of what 1940‘s baseball is all about. This HF award-winning (ALA Amelia Bloomer Selection) book follows the baseball crazed Katie through the time before and during WWII and how she changed minds. Finally, no one would ask “what good baseball was to a girl”, because “they were all too busy talking about how good girls were for baseball.”

TabathaA A great RA story to speak how you can be anything you choose to be, while also integrating history. Present using UDL 7.2 (optimize relevance, value, and authenticity), and EL 4 (link lesson topic to students‘ prior knowledge). Read aloud, animated, with music and study guide: https://dcmp.org/media/8873-players-in-pigtails. Author‘s website: http://www.shanacorey.com/players/. #UCFLAE3414SP21 3y
DrSpalding Not to date ourselves but A League of Their Own was one of my favorite movies about this historical time. While you could not do a movie to book comparison… It‘s nice to know that there are picture books that you can use in social studies instruction. Your animated read aloud is awesome. You found amazing resources! I hope you will use them in your future classroom. 3y

I am very surprised at all of the picture books you can find on how women began to play baseball. It makes me wonder which one is the most accurate.

LibrarianRyan That is a good question

#LetsTravelJuly Day 12: The story‘s setting is in the #1940s – a time when most of the young men are out fighting the war, leaving the women to do most of the work that they usually assume – including baseball! An opportunity has now presented itself. What entertained me, most of all, was how baseball was initially packaged as a feminine activity to make it acceptable for women to play it. " did you know that one of America's favorite songs, Take Me Out to the Ballgame, was written about a girl?

This is such a good book about feminism and women's past in sports like baseball. I really did enjoy reading this book because it would be a great activity to read to children and teach them that anybody can do anything that they put their minds too.

Katie Casey is determined to help start the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League! This gave women the opportunity to play professional baseball during the time that the men were fighting in World War 2. This is a wonder HF book that sparks so much inspiration in the lives of young women. This book would be a great IR. #UCFLAE3414f17.

MeganMc http://www.shanacorey.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Shana-Corey-Educators-Guide... This website is a wonderful resource page from Shana Corey herself. It had an interview, guidon questions for students, and wonderful plans you can implement in your classroom. 6y
MeganMc The UDL is 8.1 heighten salience of goals and objectives. This is because the website provides so many guides and questions to keep you engaged on what the main objective is. The EL is 7 show students how to use graphic organizers.

Ps: I️ really connected to this book because “A League of Their Own” is my FAVORITE movie and I grew up playing softball!

DrSpalding Ps: Me too for the exact same reasons. I‘ve been to Cooperstown NY and saw some of the places where the movie was filmed. I also went to Baseball Hall of Fame where the ladies are honored. It‘s awesome! ❤️⚾️ 6y

Players in Pigtails is a HF RA picture book written by Shana Corey. This book is about the rising of women‘s role in baseball during the war, and how that made a big impact on how girls were viewed back when no one thought women could play sports. I would use UDL principle 3.2 and esol strategy 50 to learn more about women‘s suffrage in America.

Brittanyradzak http://www.shanacorey.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/Shana-Corey-Educators-Guide... This gives many different activities and lesson plans that would be very useful in a classroom. It gives students a chance to explore writing their own HF book. This resource provides NF questions and comprehension questions. It also gives mini lessons that highlight the alliteration and onomatopoeia‘s used. #ucflae3414f17 (edited) 6y
