Some reading and tea on the porch before I start working.

I loved this book so much! I want to read more from this author because the way she writes a fairytale has my heart bursting. All my childhood fantasies came true in this book and it's the kind of story that all princesses should be read at bedtime. It was beautiful. Filled with sisterly love, courage, strength, magical creatures, and romance.

(2010, French original 1892) Jules Verne's "Château des Carpathes" is the opposite of what you expect from Verne: with an apparently haunted castle and supernatural events, though the cover's promise of "The original zombie story" is a lie. There is some effective atmosphere and fun adventure, but it's unfortunately spoiled by a tired love story, a few too many improbabilities, and a random dash of antisemitism.

This one left me broken hearted. I took my time with it, the third book in the trilogy, partly because I didn't want it to end, and partly because it wasn't an easy read with all the loss and despair the characters had to go through, and all the stupidity and manipulation the country had to experience as World War I was approaching.
This story will definitely stay with me.

This was a beautifully strange story, filled with otherworldly traditions from different cultures, fey and family. I enjoyed it quite a lot but it was immediately apparent that it was a translated book because it read a little off to me. Regardless of the difference in speech, it was a very interesting kind of fairy tale.

I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a Russian Fairy Tale!

I enjoyed the second book of the trilogy as much as the first. Can't wait to read the third part.

It took me a while to read this, partly because I'm having a busy period with very little time to read, and partly because this isn't a super easy text. That said, I enjoyed every page. The history, the hidden and not-so-hidden politics behind the events, the characters and especially Bánffy's understanding of what's going on in people's heads, these were all fascinating. I'm looking forward to going on to the second book of the trilogy.

There is to be a lot going on in this one, but I loved the setting at the castle in Transylvania and the slightly gothic atmosphere of it. I really enjoyed some of the secondary characters (and I do like Georgie, too), but what a hopeless case Queenie is! In addition to the gothic atmosphere, there was humour scattered throughout the book. I thought I might like this best of the series so far, but it looks like I also rated the 2nd book the same.

Easy series to read.
