This was the first book I read by this author but it won‘t be the last. I really enjoyed this story which was impossible to put down once I started reading. Two sudden, unexpected deaths lead two women on a hunt for the truth about what happened. This is a story about obsession and revenge with the tension building from the first page, a slow burn of a story which nonetheless keeps you engaged as it heads towards the inevitable end. A good read.

“When does evil intent become evil itself? Is it evil simply to imagine and harbor an idea? Does it begin when a thought is put into action? And if that action fails, then did evil never exist to begin with?”

Just finished this on audio.. and wow. This is a wild story about 100 years of the Buendia family, tied to the small town of Macondo. There is passion, humor, sadness, madness, incest, the same handful of names used over and over, and everything that lead to the literary phrase “magical realism”. Genius. #rorygilmorereadinglist #bbrc #yeahbaby #translatedwork #bookspinbingo #wintergames2020 #teamreadnosedreindeer 16pts

Karkar Did you find it hard to follow on audio? 5y
Sarahreadstoomuch @Karkar at the beginning. But then I found the family tree online (and in print copy) and that helped tremendously!! 5y

Mehso-so

There is Se-oh who has just lost her father to a maybe accidental fire. There is Ki-Jeong who just lost her younger sister to a maybe accidental drowning. The two meet and the book goes all over the place. This coulda been a mystery, a maybe crime novel, maybe a cautionary tale of the evils of money. I found the connection of the 2 MC‘s underwhelming and even though the ending was enthralling I almost fell asleep getting there. Just a so so.

Translated picturebook! This was incredibly beautiful and a great way to introduce children to death.
