FINAL THOUGHTS! #TangerineBuddyRead

What did you think of the ending? Did everyone get what they deserved? Do you feel the story is resolved?

SilversReviews I forget the names of the characters. Was Lucy the conniving one? I wish she would have been caught. Why didn‘t Youseff ask to see the person who said they were Lucy? :) He would have seen that Alice wasn‘t Lucy? And not sure I am remember correctly, but why didn‘t Alice tell she wasn‘t Lucy if she did talk to Youseff? (edited) 6y
Pamwurtzler I think there was a lot left hanging. What happens when Maude discovers that all the money is gone? 6y
SilversReviews @Pamwurtzler I couldn‘t remember what happened with the money. So Lucy took it all? THANKS. 6y
See All 14 Comments
Pamwurtzler @SilversReviews Yeah, Lucy had papers made up in Alice‘s name & withdrew it all from the bank. 6y
BookishTrish I found the ending unsatisfying because things could‘ve so easily been cleared up if Youssef had been asked to identify Alice and Maude done her due diligence as guardian. 6y
SilversReviews @BookishTrish Exactly...not sure why Maude didn‘t do that. 6y
SilversReviews @Pamwurtzler Thanks....I remember about the papers, but wasn‘t sure about her taking all the money out. Such an evil character. 6y
riversong153 @BookishTrish I felt that way too but it was appropriate and kept to the storyline throughout the book. Alice had no one in her corner but Tom and she lost him. John and Lucy used her. Maude wanted to be rid of her. It was really sad. Alice dies right? I just want to make sure I read it correctly. She commits suicide? Or at least we‘re lead to believe that right? 6y
riversong153 I loved the book. It was so creepy and cunning. I mean I hated what Lucy did the entire time but I thought the story to be believable in the world the author created. No one had any reason to believe Alice, no one. 6y
riversong153 @mrozzz As always, thanks for hosting!! This was a great pick! 6y
mrozzz Thank you @riversong153 😃 It‘s always fun!! If there are a few sitting on your TBR which you might want to do a buddy read for, let‘s decide what we can get to next!! 6y
mrozzz I totally agree with @BookishTrish Although you also make a good point @riversong153 it does follow along the trend that leave Alice on her own despite the assumed mental incapacity she has. I wasn‘t sure who died at the end?! 6y
Mdargusch I thought Alice went on to live with a new identity ? Hmmmm. I guess I need to reread the ending? 6y
Mdargusch Thanks for hosting @mrozzz . Getting this book for Mother‘s Day was perfect timing. 6y

3) Could you believe Lucy‘s plan was thorough enough to replace her papers/passport with Sophie‘s name?
I thought for sure she was about to be found out if Maude read out the name of Alice‘s troublesome college roommate. #TangerineBuddyRead

Reviewsbylola That def shocked me. Lucy‘s conniving nature was revealed so slowly that it was hard to pinpoint how manipulative she was. 6y
SilversReviews I wish Maude would have done more research to find out what was going on. 6y
Pamwurtzler I agree- I was disappointed in Maude. She was too quick to believe others at Alice‘s expense. 6y
See All 8 Comments
SilversReviews @Pamwurtzler And she treated Alice like a “dimwit.” 6y
BookishTrish I thought being paranoid enough to draw up a fake passport was totally on brand for Lucy. I didn‘t understand why she was so obsessive though. 6y
riversong153 @Reviewsbylola Agreed! It was hard. I was also disappointed like many mentioned here by Maude‘s clear ignorance of the situation. She could‘ve at least heard Alice out. For both the situation with Tom and John she just wanted to shut Alice up and tell her she was confused. She didn‘t even try to hear her perspective. I know she felt Alice had mental health issues but how could she believe a complete stranger without any real investigation? 6y
Mdargusch I totally agree @riversong153 and part of me almost believed Maude was involved just because she was so quick not to believe Alice. 6y
KateFulfordAuthor If you need a recommendation, may I point you to my People‘s Book Prize nominated debut? Sassy female narrative, laugh out dialogue and a pacy plot. Check the link in the bio for 2 free chapters, reviews and more. 6y

2) It seems, at least from Alice‘s perspective, that Lucy‘s presence is shaking her out of whatever neurological fog she‘s been stuck in since the accident. Is that plausible? Or is her subconscious reaction to Lucy‘s obsession so visceral that she‘s being reminded of paranoia she experienced when she was with Tom?

#TangerineBuddyRead

SilversReviews I don‘t think Lucy‘s presence shook her out of her fog. I wish Alice would have MADE Youseff see that she wasn‘t Lucy - not sure if I am remembering correctly if he did see Alice, though. Listened to this a month or so ago. Or why didn‘t they say something? (edited) 6y
SilversReviews I LOVED the book. 6y
riversong153 I think it shook her out of the fog, at least partially. I don‘t think Alice was ever paranoid about Lucy. I could be wrong but paranoia requires you to be scared of things that aren‘t happening. She had every reason to fear Lucy. Lucy was gaslighting her and mentally abusing her. (edited) 6y
See All 8 Comments
riversong153 She had reasonable fear with the situation with Tom and the situation with Lucy in Tangier. 6y
riversong153 @SilversReviews Alice visited him in prison to ask him to tell the police that she was the real Alice. He said that the police had no reason to believe him or her. 6y
SilversReviews @riversong153 Thank you...I forgot about that. I would have insisted. :) 6y
Mdargusch She needed to get Youseff to see she wasn‘t Lucy as soon as she realized he was confused - those things annoy me. @riversong153 @SilversReviews I want to shake the characters in books sometimes. I think Tom liked Alice in a fog so he did nothing to help her out of it. Lucy gave Alice the confidence to do new things. 6y
SilversReviews @Mdargusch That annoyed me too. 6y

1) Were you surprised by the scheming Lucy carried out in the final section? Are you surprised that Youssef observed John‘s demise? #TangerineBuddyRead

SilversReviews Not surprised that Youseff saw the demise of John. And no on Lucy‘s scheming....she was conniving and evil. So did she get all of Alice‘s money? Did Maude send her money? 6y
riversong153 I‘m not surprised that Youseff saw the demise of John either @SilversReviews ! Also not surprised by Lucy‘s actions. Once she killed Tom, even though that was an accident, she didn‘t stick around for the aftermath. That showed that she had no conscience. She was always willing to do whatever to get Alice to herself. 6y
riversong153 I couldn‘t tell if Maude sent the money but Lucy pretended to be Alice to get the money out. 6y
SilversReviews @riversong153 Agree on what you are saying about John‘s demise or how Lucy had no conscience. She was evil. Thanks about the Maude and money information. 6y
Mdargusch No I‘m not surprised either @riversong153 @SilversReviews - Lucy is truly and evil one. 6y

Pickpick

Wow. Comparisons to Hitchcock are ?? Mangan has a gift for writing a dramatic/cinematic story. We meet the MCs when former Bennington College roommates Alice & Lucy reconnect in Tangier- the reason they lost touch bubbles just below the surface, building tension as the POVs alternate between the 2 young women.

Whereas many other contemporary "thrillers" are such slow burns that they lack any fire, this one had me questioning everything.

riversong153 Totally agree about contemporary slow burns!! 6y

mrozzz Thank you!! @Mdargusch 6y
mrozzz @riversong153 Right?? So often I fly through a book because of the encouraging reviews that say how, well, thrilling it is, and I don‘t bail when nothing happens because it must happen at the VERY end, like Behind Her Eyes, and then I finish thinking wait, what was supposed to happen?? 6y
mrozzz Ha! Hope you pick it up and enjoy it as much as I did @LazyDays 6y
mrozzz @Jess Woohoo! The audiobook must be good! 6y

Pickpick

I love how different this book is than anything I‘ve read recently. Overly atmospheric, Mangan really drives home the smoky, sweaty, sultry feel of Tangier. Everyone who has compared it to Hitchcock is spot on. The story gets creepier and creepier, but it‘s so subtle that you‘re not sure what exactly is happening or who is the crazy one. Perfectly done. #tangerinebuddyread

batsy I was hoping the book will be exactly like your review describes it to be! 😊 Hope to get to it soon. 6y
Reviewsbylola I know, I‘m not sure why. I think maybe we‘ve been spoiled with thrillers having such shocking twists and turns. This definitely isn‘t your run of the mill thriller. @erzascarletbookgasm 6y

4) I‘m finding the writing style rather timeless, which is for me a big indicator of masterful author. I keep forgetting that this is the mid ‘50s until a few of the historical references pop up. Does the same thing happen to you while reading this book? Do you think the author‘s choice to put the characters in this year will ultimately prove meaningful/less?
#TangerineBuddyRead

bedandabook I agree with you that the writing is timeless, although I do have an image in my head as I‘m reading which is very fifties - I think because of the cover photo. I think it‘s already an integral part of the story, as Alice is very much a stay-at-home wife. 6y
riversong153 This story is definitely timeless. This could be 1958 or 2008. However, I do think this being in the fifties is meaningful. We see it with Alice‘s dependence on John for “emotional support” and the appearance of normalcy by 50s standards. We also see how taken aback John is that Lucy appears so independent. Not to mention the homosexual relationship that Lucy desires to have with Alice. I don‘t know if Alice sort of wants it too and just can‘t... (edited) 6y
riversong153 Because of what Lucy has done or if she really isn‘t interested in that sort of relationship at all. 6y
See All 6 Comments
SilversReviews The writing is timeless and beautiful. Lucy definitely is cunning and conniving. I‘‘m still not convinced yet about the homosexual relationship. @bedandabook @riversong153 @mrozzz - thanks for tagging me. 6y
Mdargusch I think the writing is timeless however I think the time period makes Alice‘s behavior with her domineering husband more believable. I also doubt tangier would be like that now with the night clubs and that society class structure. 6y
Pamwurtzler @Mdargusch I agree on that point. Any time period more current would make Alice‘s relationship with her husband just irksome. And the clothing plays into that too, literally, with Alice never having worn pants. 6y

3) We find out that Alice knew Lucy sabotaged Tom‘s car (even if based on her memory she didn‘t mean to entirely sever the break line)— so why did she even let her former roommate into her home & back into her life when she showed up in Tangier? Did the accident leave her with such neurological deficits that she couldn‘t recall the events that precipitated her injuries? #TangerineBuddyRead

bedandabook I was wondering that. Alice seemed, whilst not quite welcoming of Lucy, certainly not hostile to her when she turned up In Tangier. It does seem odd, however I think we may turn out to have a very unreliable narrator in Alice. 6y
riversong153 @bedandabook I‘ve been considering this as well. Alice is clearly not well but I also feel like Lucy is bonkers so there may be a mix of both of them being unreliable. I also feel like she worked so hard to forget it as her aunt wanted her too so she probably couldn‘t stand letting it surface again until Lucy brought it up in such a cavalier manner. 6y
SilversReviews @mrozzz @bedandabook @riversong153 I don‘t think she knew she had severed the brake line until now, but I may be incorrect. As for why did she let her in...I think Alice was hesitant, but Lucy is so “pushy” I don‘t think she would have had a choice. At times I thought the Aunt was in on the charade the whole time. :) 6y
See All 6 Comments
Mdargusch Ha! Seriously?!? Why in the world would she let her in and then let her stay there indefinitely? I am constantly confused by her actions. 6y
Reviewsbylola I think she was caught unaware, and felt she had to let her in. I also think the mind games Lucy played with her always had Alice second guessing what was real and what wasn‘t. She didn‘t know for sure that Lucy was involved in Tom‘s death until she admitted it. 6y
BookishTrish These kinds of questions are where the book falls flat for me. Lucy is obsessed but doesn‘t seem to me to be a clever enough mastermind to put one over on all the people she‘s manipulating... I‘d like to book more if Alice‘s personality went through more of a transformation; but I read her as being consistently frail. 6y

2) We got a glimpse into Alice‘s old self when she and Lucy take a trip out of Tangier— is it just a fluke that she was able to forget her former anger at Lucy or like John claims, is she demented? Is Lucy the delusional one for thinking I‘m college that Alice would always be hers?
#TangerineBuddyRead

riversong153 This is an interesting question. I think Alice just got caught up in the moment. Lucy provided familiarity and stability for her to venture out. I don‘t feel like John did at all. Alice was definitely repressing that memory. It seemed like her aunt encouraged her too and it was far away from her mind until Lucy brought it up again. I wouldn‘t say Alice is delusional but definitely suffering from something. The sad thing is that she has no one on.. 6y
riversong153 Her side. She doesn‘t have any unconditional love or acceptance. Her husband wants her money, Lucy wants to essentially be her entire life. It‘s really sad, interesting and disturbing all at once. 6y
bedandabook I am convinced, although I could be proved wrong, that Alice will turn out to be an unreliable narrator and be delusional. But we shall see! In the meantime I‘m very much enjoying the journey. I agree with @riversong153 that she is a very lonely character with no-one to depend on. But is there a reason for that? 6y
See All 7 Comments
riversong153 @bedandabook could be! If it turns out that she‘s unreliable, I hope it‘s in the most believable way and is written well! 6y
SilversReviews @mrozzz @bedandabook @riversong153 I think they are both “messed up.” :) Lucy was evil and just continued it all. 6y
Mdargusch The city of Tangier seemed to be so oppressive to Alice and when she left there and broke Free, she was able to be herself and do her photography again. 6y
Reviewsbylola I think what @Mdargusch said makes a lot of sense and I also think Alice is just so uptight and so closed off because of what‘s happened to her over the course of her life that she has a hard time ever feeling comfortable in her own skin. 6y
