Read this one all today in a sitting. Really really loved 95% of this book. It had descriptive writing that made the horror scenes so tense. The dread was building, the pacing was good, the horror was creeping and then…

The biggest conflict was not resolved.

Now I don‘t mind when books have an open ending, but this novel‘s ending didn‘t even give us that curtesy.

Something in the Walls by Daisy Pearce is an intriguing and satisfying choice for spooky reading season. The story revolves around 13-year-old Alice, who is suspected of being possessed by a witch or is it a hoax? Newly qualified child psychologist Mina and skeptical journalist Sam are determined to investigate the matter. The plot is quite reminiscent of the movie The Conjuring 2.

How to properly evaluate a teen girl who has experienced trauma and now is withdrawn, says spooky things in a weird voice, and believes a witch is watching her, per the actual psychologist (and a reporter she barely knows but eagerly joined in this trip) in this book:

1. Pack a bag and move into the family's small house for an undecided length of time.
2. Have one private conversation with the afflicted girl of maybe 30 minutes' duration.

This book had me hooked from beginning to end. Some people may not like it, but I thought it was pretty good.

This cover 😍!! The story was good as well, sort of a folk horror/domestic drama/gothic horror. It ended up having the roots of the “mystery” being very realistic and sad, which I wasn‘t expecting, and I think I would have preferred it if it kept its feet more in the paranormal. That being said I still enjoyed it! 🌟🌟🌟🌟
