Mensun Bound was the Director of Exploration to attempt to find Ernest Shackleton‘s shipwreck at the bottom of an Antarctic sea, the Endurance, which sank during his attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole. This book covers both attempts in 2019 (unsuccessful) & 2022, which was successful. The 2022 search was bookended first by the pandemic, and then the Russian invasion of Ukraine, both affecting the morale of the crew. Even so they ⬇️

Texreader persevered through extreme conditions and amazingly discovered it. I‘m sad I don‘t remember it in the news. I too was overwrought about the Russian invasion. This probably won‘t be a favorite of mine, the book can be extremely technical, and you have to know a lot of boating terms, which escape me. But I appreciated the history, and the palpable joy from the author from finding the ship. This is my 2nd book for #Antarctica #readingOceania 3w
Librarybelle I don‘t remember the discovery mentioned in the news either! 3w

I started this audiobook today for #Antarctica #readingOceania. I decided to forego Greta and Valdin. I‘ve read way too many books on #NewZealand (6 or 7) and once I started listening to it I wasn‘t too keen on it. This will be only my second book for Antarctica

Science writer Gabrielle Walker reveals #Antarctica, from the human history/present to the animals to the science being done on land, underwater and from space. This was a totally fascinating book sprinkled with good humor (as well as some harrowing happenings) that I absolutely loved. So glad I finally got to it!

My last read was a little too heavy, so back to Lupin i go :)
Cuter book cover than the one on my epub. I wonder if they redid new editions with the netflix visuals ?

nanuska_153 How are the Lupin books? Used to love the cartoons when I was a kid 😅but didn't really enjoy the series that came out a couple of years ago 1mo
catsuit_mango @nanuska_153 i like the books, they are of course dated and some of the plots have been seen a lot since but they are well written and Lupin is a fun character. I never saw the cartoons, but my mom was a fan of the original series and I liked the new ones even if the plots are even more unrealistic than the original books :) 1mo
nanuska_153 @catsuit_mango he was very funny in the cartoons (and a bit of a pervert 😅) so I missed him being funny in the series. Might give one of the books a try, does it matter which one I start with? And if not, which one would you recommend? 1mo
catsuit_mango @nanuska_153 not much of a pervert in the books. There is a bit of an arc in the series and recurring characters, but not enough that you have to start from the first book. I have not read enough of them to have a favourite. You might like Lupin against Herlock Sholmes just for the parody of Holmes :) 1mo

I was curious to read this author and excited that he‘s finally been translated into English, however it wasn‘t for me.
I like the detective, Eugene Tarpon—an interesting character I wouldn‘t mind getting to know better. However the style didn‘t work for me. Too much slapstick type action for me.

Bluebird @Librarybelle @TheAromaofBooks yes! Nice to complete a prompt! 😀 2mo
Bluebird @Hooked_on_books @BarbaraBB I was disappointed. I really thought I‘d like it. I may be in the minority though. Seems many liked it. Perhaps French Noir just isn‘t my thing….. 2mo

A Woman in the Polar Night | Christiane Ritter

Pickpick

Christiane Ritter went to the arctic circle in 1933/34 to spend the winter with her hunter husband in the hut above (On Svalbard, a big island above Norway). She describes this adventure very matter of factly, what it takes to get through each day and the changing environment as the sun disappears. I found it fascinating and have become mildly obsessed with the idea of going to Norway but not quite this far North!

Texreader My husband‘s niece lives and works in Svalbard! We‘ve been to Norway many times to see his family (he‘s from Bergen) and I highly recommend a trip there. We may go as far north as Tromso next time we visit but he said not Svalbard. It‘s really really extreme north. His niece seems to love it though (edited) 9mo
Cinfhen Ha!!! I can see you doing that 😘 9mo
Centique @Texreader how amazing! What does she do there? (Im imagining its still pretty unpopulated but i may be wrong!) Yes the book mentions Tromso as the city they leave from. What a beautiful place to visit. 9mo

Very interesting and full of amazing detail and descriptions.
I was quite uneasy about some parts but could respect what they needed to do. Also full admiration for her determination.

This looks rather good. It's a Pushkin Press translation which always appeals:)
