I picked this— another prof I know where I work— for #ReadHarder #micropress and #bookaboutbooks. I liked some chapters more than others but overall this is a really beautiful book. The author processes her beloved father‘s untimely death through the lens of literature- Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Camus, Arthur Clarke, and (my favorite chapter) Raymond Chandler. It might inspire me to go read some science fiction.. not my usual genre!

This is a tough book to read. And by tough I mean, subject matter. #bookriot #2017readingchallenge #micropress

This is a raw and intimate portrait of falling in love, falling apart, divorce, and renewal in Beckley, wv. In alternating short chapters we get to see the relationship at its beginning and then when it is coming apart. Scott‘s desperation is depicted so vividly as he talks about depression, loneliness, alcoholism and eventually some hope. #readharder #micropress #100milesofwhereilive #bookriot

Kaye Oh my gosh. I love Scott McClanahan ! 6y
Blaire @Kaye me too! Crapalachia blew me away. 6y
Kaye Have you heard it in audio? I‘ve listened to that too many times to count. It‘s so hard to describe. He is funny but yet his life just breaks your heart. 6y
Blaire @Kaye I‘ll check it out. I‘ve found his writing very moving. 6y

Surf Music | R. S. Deese

I guess I may be a bit biased since the author is a professor where I work, but if you‘re looking for a #micropress choice for #ReadHarder, R.S. Deese‘s poetry is a real pleasure. He is a historian by day and a poet in his spare time, and his poems are both profound and funny. Published by Pelekinesis which I believe should count for this challenge. Trying to #deweysreadathon with two kids and an activity filled day hasn‘t worked out so well. But I did manage over 100 pages of Homegoing and hit up my favorite local bookstore and picked out some birthday presents for myself. #bookhaul #micropress #tyrantbooks

I can't think of a book I've read that is more #raw than this one. Read it for feminist book club a couple of years back and led to some intense discussions about female sexuality, pornography, prostitution, rape, and exploitation. The author writes in a very raw manner about her sexual experiences. It is disturbing and intense. #micropress #fallintobooks #tyrantbooks

For the #micropress prompt for #ReadHarder, I downloaded a mini-chapbook of poetry from Platypus Press - In Transit by Ekin Aydogdu. Sad and beautiful.

There are a couple of other poems out in the wild (though I liked those in the book more) but I'd love to be able to buy a full collection:

What are you reading for this #LitsyReadingChallenge category? What makes a press an indie press? #indiepress

And how does it differ from a #micropress for #ReadHarder for Book Riot

vivastory A micro press is basically run by only a handful of people. Independent presses don't have quite as much to spend on ads etc but several are distributed nationally. A press like graywolf & coffee house are Indies 7y
underthebelljar I'm reading the tagged book for indie publisher. Not sure what would qualify for the micro press category though. 7y
Brie Book riot has an article about micro presses and suggestions, I would search online for that. I second @vivastory about graywolf for indies and would also add Melville House. 7y

Sweettartlaura Swimming Lessons - in the US it was released by Tin House Press, a small outfit in OR/NYC. You can check their website for other releases if you like 🙂 7y
ReadingEnvy Half the international books I read qualify. If you read poetry it's likely to be a micro press too! 7y

#micropress pick! Scholarly article collection about the "other side of Austin" - the historical and present discriminating practices, from housing to labor to immigration. Even if you're not an Austinite or Texan, this is a great socioeconomic primer on how progress that sounds good on paper (tech growth, expansion, and population booms) comes at a cost to people on the margins.
