Certain Dark Things: A Novel | Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Happy Indigenous Peoples‘ Day! Perfect timing that I‘m reading this book today as I finish the #JustOneMoreChapter #readathon. SMG includes a lot of #indigenous history in her stories based in Mexico, in this story the history of the great Aztec capital, Tenochtitlan prior to being colonized and Mexico City built on top of its ruins. This is an impressive 3D reconstruction of the city. https://tenochtitlan.thomaskole.nl #HauntedShelf #BlackCatCrew

(2015) Moreno-Garcia's debut novel is a YAish book about three high school kids in 1988 Mexico City who use music to work magic, in a dual timeline with a story about their adult selves reconnecting twenty years later. The 1988 story is appealing and its high school character dynamics ring true for me. It's less clear to me what the author intended with the later timeline, which for my taste could have been omitted. Soft pick.

Reggie That Meche, even on the last page, so stubborn! lol I loved this book so much and all the music references. I loved the explanation of her name from her dad……🎶Gracias a la vida🎵. Nice review. 2mo
swynn @Reggie Definitely appreciated the music references, since so many were new to me. I spent a lot of time on YouTube while reading this! 2mo

In this atmospheric noir novel set in Mexico in the 1970s, Maite is a dissatisfied secretary who livens up her life with romance comics, lies, and the occasional petty theft, while Elvis is a member of the Hawks, hired thugs trained to violently disrupt student protests. As they both become embroiled in the search for a missing young woman, Maite and Elvis each seek escape through music and glimpses of beauty in a tedious and often violent world.

A story set in 60s and 70s political tumult in Mexico. The hawks, formed by America CIa, work against communist groups . Protagonist “Elvis” has had a tough life, works hard and loves music. Trying to make his way with some thuggish skirmishes, he catches eyes for Maite, one of the ladies he is suevelling. a plain Jane brought into this dangerous story over some pictures her neighbor took that she possesses. A bit long winded, the time/settinng

Thank you so much @Nazgul93 !!! I‘m so excited to cozy up with this bag of Reese‘s and start one of these books — but I can‘t decide which one! And I love the Beetlejuice bookmark! Thanks again!! #AHRS #AllHallowsReadSwap

Nazgul93 I'm glad you liked everything! Certain dark things is one of my favorite vampire books! I meant to write a note but totally forgot, sorry! And my mom said that Butcher & blackbird is really good! 12mo

3 ⭐️s
This was going to be 5 ⭐️s with the unique lore and world building; the characters were so relatable and I was SO invested in them and their struggles. Then that ending comes and punches you right in the chest. I felt like the ending took away the whole point of the story. If there‘s ever a sequel, I will absolutely rush to snatch it up because I need closure. 😅🤣

In this fascinating noirish novel, Domingo, a young man who scavenges trash in the vampire-free zone of Mexico City, gets caught up in a deadly war between rival vampire families when he meets Atl, a young vampire on the run. Atl is the descendent of high priestesses who defended Aztec temples, her enemies a gang of vicious newcomers. Unique and intriguing world-building, vivid characters and a distinctive setting made this an exceptional read.

booklover3258 I want to read all of her books! This will be my next one after Untamed Shore. 12mo
