Not my normal type of book but I read this for #Guatemala for #ReadingTheAmericas2023 @Librarybelle @BarbaraBB

Despite this I did enjoy this book that told the story of Father Stanley Rother who was murdered in Guatemala in 1981, having been in Guatemala since 1968. In 2017 he was made into a Saint. A remarkable man, who was warned, and given option to leave, on the day he was murdered but refused to.

Andrew65 25th book finished in November #Rushathon @DieAReader @Ghabi4Roses
10th and final book finished for #NovelNovember

Visited Ephrata Cloister in Lancaster Pennsylvania, part of the PA Trails of History program. And there was an amazing book! In 1745, Jacob Gottschalk(1st Mennonite Bishop in America)arranged with the Ephrata Cloister to have them translate the book from its original Dutch into German and print it. It took 15 men three years to finish and in 1749, at 1512 pages, it was the largest single volume printed in America before the Revolutionary War.

Leftcoastzen Wow! 1y
DivineDiana @Leftcoastzen The Martyrs' Mirror is still a beloved book among the Amish, Old Order Mennonites and Conservative Mennonites, with a copy usually in every home and often given as a wedding gift. 😲 I think it would give me nightmares! NOT adding to my TBR! 1y
LeahBergen That‘s so cool! 1y

I decided to use www.pickerwheel.com to decide what I read next because I couldn‘t decide. I had 3 choices on the wheel: Every Last Secret, Dorothy Must Die Series and Foxe‘s Book Of Martyrs. I wasn‘t wanting to read a book about Christians dying for their faith right now. I was hoping the wheel would have chosen the Dorothy Must Die Series because I need to finish it. I want to know how it ends.

Knowing what was to come made this a challenging read. It was interesting to learn more about Dietrich Bonhoeffer‘s family, beliefs and theological writings. Reading the horrors of the Third Reich never gets easier. It was enlightening to learn about the resistance and disheartening to realize that their plots failed so the regime did not fall sooner. Bonhoeffer‘s impact on Christian theology and a believer‘s place in the world is undeniable. 4⭐️s

Jonathanw That was a good read, just got “Letters from Prison”. Next in the read list. I heard the original biography by his long time friend Bethge. Is even better read. 2y
Honeybeebooks I am definitely interested in reading some of Bonhoeffer‘s works. I might need to tackle the biography by Bethge too. 2y

“We will have to move through a very deep valley, I believe much deeper than we can sense now, before we are able to ascend the other side again. The main thing is that we let ourselves be led entirely and not resist and become impatient. Then it will all go right.” page 374
