This is a beautiful story of magical creatures and places mixed with coming of age feelings that children work through like grief, loss, friendship and love. Mal and Christopher form the heart of this story whilst magical creatures spin around them flying them to a heart wrenching finale. Young and old will love this tale.

What a unique adventure! Plum is learning what it takes to be a Guardian…if she can pass the first test! This adventure has mashup creatures, a lush setting, and friendship. I am looking forward to seeing what else Plum gets up to! 🧘‍♀️

Once There Was | Kiyash Monsef

When Marjan‘s father is mysteriously murdered, she discovers he was a veterinarian to the kinds of mythic creatures in the stories he once told her…and she inherited his power to care for beasts like griffons and gnomes herself.

Once There Was is an emotionally rich, beautifully told story, full of adventure, mystery, and magical realism, with great Iranian-American representation, about the paradox of living—wonder and responsibility, grief 👇

underground_bks 2) and connection—that I‘d love for readers of all ages to enjoy and engage with, however I do think younger readers (this is rated ages 10+) will struggle to maintain interest over the 400 medium-paced pages and more mature plot lines, and I worry that, despite how utterly realistically and compassionately she‘s written, more privileged readers will find Marjan “unlikeable” because of her grief and anger. 1y
underground_bks 3) Spoiler:
I found the villain‘s motivations both a bit murky and kind of pat and the murderer reveal may also be a bit confusing for younger readers—and it felt a little uncomfortable to me concerning the human-creature binary in the world of the book…and possibly problematic from the perspective of mental illness representation.

underground_bks Finally) This book is special, ambitious, and one-of-a-kind and I‘m hopeful it will enchant and challenge readers in a major way. 1y

Super cute character design! I liked seeing all of the different animals, and the witch characters have really fun designs. It was great seeing the characters rise to face the crisis at the vet. Maybe needed a little more character depth, but I don‘t know if that‘s a common problem with short middle grade comics or not. Loved the end section walking through the comic creation process. #comic #middlegrade #bugbear #magicalCreatures

A child has just gotten a pet hamster. It‘s slow, and lazy, and makes a mess in its cage that has to be cleaned. If only the child could have a gryphon, or a unicorn, or a manticore. But each of those take their own special care as well. Join the fun rhyming ride as a child makes a pro and con list of various mythical creatures for pets. It just may make your kids realize that dragons wouldn‘t make a good pet.

marleed Haha. I bought this book for my son. He was nearly 30 but his name is Griffin - sooooo! 2y
LibrarianRyan @marleed ahhh. That‘s so sweet 2y

I visited my cousin in a town about 1,5 hours out of Cape Town today. It was the first time we really spent time together as adults. Among other things, we talked about books we read to our children and she lent me this lovely volume that I had never ever heard of 😍💜

EvieBee Oh wow! His books are hard to find. Enjoy! 2y
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @EvieBee I didn't even know that. I hope my children love it! 2y
