My last stop of my little mini WV vacation was to a bookstore where I couldn‘t help but scoop up a few Appalachian books that were on my TBR ⛰
Reading my birthday present from my in-laws while at my new job as a historical interpreter. Felt appropriate. Or closer to appropriate than Harry Potter.
Used bookstore finds from yesterday. I *hate* stickers on book covers, but it's hard to argue with trade credit options.
Is Foxfire a thing outside of southern Appalachia? Not sure. But these books are basically collections of traditions, folk lore, and practical knowledge from country and mountain folk in Appalachia. It's thorough and intimate and not at all other-ing.

pickThe key to the charm of these stories is that the people interviewed (or remembered in some cases) didn't/don't think of themselves as extraordinary. They were just living their lives, which is so different from the staged "fame" we see today on social media. Plus, there are some plain interesting stories. for example, who knew that NASCAR had it roots in the early days of running moonshine?

I mean, there are definitely worse ways to spend a birthday than in the best bookstore around. I added to my Foxfire collection, got myself some birthday chocolate, found a nice LGBTQ magic realism collection and a cute felt pumpkin. Excellent day.
