Okay, I LOVED that. While the Fables series continues to pull characters from fairy tales, this arc felt very much like a truly original story, and a wonderful journey for the previously overlooked protagonist. It wove seamlessly into the continuing story of the series but really took the time to tell its particular entry in a style that felt like vintage tales of knights and adventure. A new favourite in the series' collected editions.

This is a spin-off of the graphic novel Fables series. As with the rest of the series, the colour illustrations are very well done. I have not always been all that interested in Bigby as a character, but I liked this story. It‘s been a while since I‘ve read any of the Fables series, and it was fun to read another.

I enjoyed the fables and the morals/lessons they displayed. Many of them resonated with me and made me stop and think. There were some repeat fables (the same story with the same characters and morals just written slightly different), but as a whole it was an expansive collection.

Most of Aesop's fables feature personified animals, which generally have a one-to-one symbolic relationship with a vice or virtue. For example, the fox frequently symbolizes cleverness; the hare, agility; the bull, recklessness; the donkey, fatuousness; and the ant, industriousness.

Honestly considering the tone these tales usually take, the appearance of a happily ever after was a big plot twist! Refreshed my interest in the series, glad to continue.
⚠️ This probably isn't going to be an effective or accurate warning because I don't understand the subject well myself, but there's an Israel analogy used that might be upsetting to people at this time. Read with care.

A bit more classic fantasy epic than detective noir this volume, but still chock full of interpersonal drama, machinations and incredible art.

This book is a good morning meeting book for pre-K through 2nd grade students. There is a valuable moral that can be discussed after the book is done. After the emphasis on play in Pre-K, this book would be good for early year kindergartners to learn the value of balancing work and play.
