“…over a hundred years ago great-great-grandfather Murray built this house and built it well. I wonder if, a hundred years from now, anybody will win a victory over anything because of something I left or did. It is an inspiring thought.”

This quote gave me chills—we‘re reading this 100 years after its publication. I think Emily would find that an inspiring thought!

How is your Emily-reading going this week?

TheAromaofBooks I can't deal with Aunt Ruth and her “you're sly“ accusations 😂 And Creepy Dean is literally creepier than ever. Overall the whole everyone trying to convince Emily who she wants to marry even though she's an actual child is kind of weird. But I am enjoying looking for tiny bits of LMM within the pages!! 4d
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Aunt Ruth is infuriating, and the way Emily handles all of it is a testament to how much Emily has grown!! I'd indulge in a LOT more smart remarks than Emily does. Aunt Ruth's persistent “but WHY did you do _____?“ (and then her refusal to accept an honest response to a ridiculous question) would make me want to slap her. I mean, Emily probably wants to slap her, too, but it's remarkable how much restraint she shows! 2d
TheAromaofBooks Right?? Nothing is more annoying than someone asking you a question and then refusing to believe your answer! 2d

BarbaraJean @JenlovesJT47 @lauraisntwilder @kwmg40 @TheAromaofBooks @GingerAntics Soooo, I don‘t know how I keep doing this, but I got the number of chapters wrong 🤦🏻‍♀️ I‘ve corrected the pic on this post—if you were tracking which chapters to read based on the original version of the post, please note that it‘s changed. Because Emily Climbs has 25 chapters and not 34 chapters 😩😆 7d
TheAromaofBooks Oh nice, that means I'm all caught up for this week! 😂 7d

A few years ago I read the first 2 books in this trilogy, but never finished the final one. Reading it with my daughter this month has been a treat! I will say I was frustrated that every person who met Emily for more than 5 minutes proposed to her. That felt a bit ridiculous. But I love her stubborn determination and unwillingness to give up on her dreams. I don‘t love her as much as Anne, but I might have if I‘d met her when I was young.

Devoured the final Emily book in one day somehow. It was very very good. The relationships, the growth, and especially creativity struggles were very well written. The only drawback for me was probably the way the ending was wrapped up, but still it was a very good conclusion of the trilogy, and the saga was a pleasure to read.

First read of 2024. Second installment of Emily of New Moon. This is a coming of age book, and it takes us on a journey through Emily‘s high school years, first attempts at serious writing, and even shows little bits of first love. I enjoyed the romance of it, but also the darkness. Interesting how the relationships are portrayed. For instance Emily‘s friendships with Perry and Dean (still creepy). I am looking forward to the final installment.

I just stayed up a little too late to finish this. I got to a certain point and had to know how it ended. I love Emily, and I'll definitely reread this trilogy in the future. I, too, was in love with an artist from childhood on (we've now been married almost 20 years), and there is NO WAY pride or anything else would have kept me from showing up if he'd whistled to me like Teddy does for Emily. I always had zero pride when it came to John. ❤️

LMM is *clearly* basing these bad reviews on actual reviews of her own books, right? Because this one sounds like it's describing one of the middling Anne books. (Ahem, I'm so sorry, but I do not miss Cornelia Bryant.)

BarbaraJean Ha! I wouldn‘t be surprised if these were based on reviews she herself received. (I‘m fine with Miss Cornelia, it‘s Aunt Mary Maria I cannot abide.) 2y
lauraisntwilder @BarbaraJean I didn't like Aunt Mary Maria, but it feels like the reader isn't supposed to like her. Miss Cornelia is supposed to be someone we like and, I mean, she's fine, but I'd have preferred more Anne and less Cornelia. 2y

I've been reading this a little bit every day all month, but I read the last bit all today. I really do love these. Much as I adore Anne, there's something about Emily that draws me in more. I think part of it is the diary pages, where we read Emily's perspective in her own voice. I also love the times when LMM refers to herself as Emily's biographer, especially when she's stating an opinion. The narration feels so conversational and intimate.
