I'm taking my just turned 9 year old to Barnes and Noble today to spend the birthday $ he got from the grands, and as luck would have it my IRS refund hit the bank today. So I need all the recommendations. Prefer mysteries and sci-fi and travel memoirs. I love long series I can really sink my teeth into. Don't care for romance or domestic thrillers, but I'm pretty open to anything else. Hit me up with everything you love!

lil1inblue Random thoughts:
Mystery: The Paris Apartment by Lucy Foley
Sci-Fi: The Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemisin
Travel: I actually can't think of anything here. But for some reason I keep thinking of Terry Tempest Williams - she writes a lot about nature and does so beautifully!

vivastory Mystery: ABC Murders or Crooked House (Agatha Christie)/
Sci-Fi: Lathe Of Heaven (Ursula K. Le Guin) Wild Seed (Octavia Butler)
I haven't read this one, but I have heard great things about Barry Lopez's travel book “Arctic Dreams“ Not sure if this would classify as travel memoir, but I absolutely loved Douglas Preston's account of trying to find a lost civilization with the help of many others in 2012 “The Lost City of the Monkey God“

Ruthiella I‘m not sure what you have already read, but thinking of long series: Iron Druid Chronicles by Kevin Hearne or Dresden File by Jim Butcher- both urban fantasy and Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters - mystery, romance, adventure, historical. 2mo
PuddleJumper The Kate Sugak series by Dana Stabenow is a long mystery/crime series set in Alaska. Very easy reading. 2mo

Very cute. Just short enough we could read it together in one sitting at bedtime.

These four Berenstain Bear Scouts chapters are in one binding for us. Having read through each other the last month with my son has been quite fun. I hadn't read the chapter versions before and enjoyed longer storylines with themes of problem solving, and bigger picture issues of morals than what we can find in the picture book versions. This specific story encourages us to do the right thing with the understanding that you can't claim...

MaggieCarr ... to have done anything. I like that. You do what is right because it's the right thing to do, not to brag about it. My son constantly found comparisons to his own badge earning through Trail Life USA, keeping each story, though fictitious, often applicable to his own understanding of merits. 6mo

The Princess in Black | Shannon Hale, Dean Hale

“With luck, the battle would be quick. Duchess Wigtower was in Princess Magnolia's castle. Her castle was full of secrets. Especially the broom closet. The princess in Black hoped the duchess would not snoop.“

This book is intended for children between the ages of four and seven. After looking over the book I would have to agree. This seems to be a very fun, engaging, and adventurous story for children of these ages to interact with. It is a very easy read with illustrations to help in depicting the plot. This book is also a part of a series which can allow children the opportunity to build on their understanding across other books within in the series.

This story is an example of speculative fiction as it possesses elements including fantasy, fairy tales, magic, and mythical creatures. In this story Princess Magnolia tries her best to hide her alter ego as the Princess in Black from her the nosy Dutchess. While still maintaining the duties she is upheld to as the Princess in Black, which includes transforming into a superhero who protects her kingdom from monsters.

This is an excellent book for children to read interdependently (as a book club) or independently. It can be a good choice book for students around 2nd-4th grade who enjoy all things princesses and unicorns. The princess must save the day in Monster Land and be back before the nosy dutchess reveals her secret. This book is also part of a series, which is beneficial to hep with children's comprehension skills.

Is this series cute or is this series cute? This is the first adventure of Kitty and she first has to learn how to be a heroine. But she does great, because she also has great kitty friends to help her.

This book deals with facing fears and that it's ok to ask for help (especially if they're cats). And that there's beauty in the night. And little kittens. And black cats. And white cats. And red cats.
