A fantastic boxing novel that's not really about boxing at all. A funny and often sad portrait of poverty, dashed hopes, self-sabotage, and ennui born of the feeling that your best years have passed you by before they ever even really began. This is one of those tiny, near-perfect books, and if not for the abrupt, seemingly arbitrary ending this would be a five-star pick for me.

While the subject was to be the relationship between Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali, this book encompassed the trials and triumphs of many Black musicians, celebrities, and athletes. It isn‘t hard to determine the Author‘s blind spots but he encouraged the charisma of Muhammad Ali to shine through his prose. A much more complex look at the sixties than I had expected. #Nonfictionovember
