This book broke my heart. But I feel that it is a really necessary read. Something we all should be more aware of. Thank you Shannie for the recommendation!

I was a tried-and-true American Girl fan way back when as a 90s kid, but since she made her debut, I have been thinking I need to check out #Melody, a Detroit girl from the 1960s. Has anyone's kid read these? What did they think? #AmericanGirl #JamminJune #MittenLitten #BlackStoriesMatter
@Eggs

Eggs My girls had American Girl dolls and stories and loved them (me too). Melody looks wonderful 🤗 4y
Andrea313 @Eggs Did you daughters have any favorites? I grew up on the original 3 girls and have read stories from some of the subsequent characters over the years, but haven't kept up in the past decade. However, a girl from my hometown in the midst of the Civil Rights Movement? Yes please! 4y

It was a good “mail” week in terms of my #integrateyourshelf project. I‘ve been reading diverse fiction for years, but I can afford to put my money where my priorities are, so I‘m making an effort to buy more from BIPOC authors and get my white authors through the library.

The physical books support #DuendeDistrict pop-up bookstore through bookshop.com and the audiobook supports #SemiColon bookstore through Libro.fm.

#blackstoriesmatter

Julsmarshall I find myself in much of the same place; I‘ve read pretty diversely and seek out #ownvoices but I have so much farther to go. Your post eloquently expressed exactly how I‘m feeling 😄 Happy reading/listening. (edited) 4y
Emilymdxn Fantastic post and I love the idea of the #integrateyourshelf project, is it an organised one I can join? I‘ve felt like I‘ve been consciously trying to read more diversely for years but when I crunched the numbers this week it showed my reading was much more dominated by white authors than I realised. When I get paid I‘m putting in an order from a black owned london bookshop I‘ve found online recently, which is a good baby step 4y
ChasingOm @Emilymdxn It‘s nothing organized, just a hashtag I came up with. I read something on my social media this past week about how saying you want “diversity” in the workplace is more like you want to look like you‘re trying while “integration” should be the real goal. So I merged that with a book pun and here we are. 😂 Maybe I‘ll think some more on my goals with the project and invite people to join.... (edited) 4y
Emilymdxn Id love to be part of an effort to make this a thing! That‘s a really interesting thought from your social media. I‘d not thought of it before but now you say it I think I agree. 4y
ChasingOm I‘ve never done a “thing” on Litsy before, lol, but if you want to toss some ideas back and forth, you can email me at chasingom (at) gmail. 😄 I think it could be fun! 4y

If you're still looking for resources around anti-racism, Black Lives Matter, and and the Black experience, I highly recommend The Burden. This collection is a plea for America to understand what life post-slavery remains like for many African Americans, who must continually fight racial injustice and rise above the lowered expectations and hateful bigotry that attempt to keep them shackled to that past. #BlackLivesMatter #BlackStoriesMatter
