I have an odd love for historical children‘s chapter books. On vacation last week in a thrift store, I found this book about Betsy Ross and someone‘s grocery list from 1975. I think this is the oldest dated item I have ever found in a book.

Thinking about this today.
“If we can't confront the reality that taking a knee has nothing to do with disrespecting the flag, then it will be difficult for us to move forward.”

On September 14, 1814, U.S. soldiers at Baltimore‘s Fort McHenry raised a huge American flag to celebrate a crucial victory over British forces during the War of 1812. The sight of those “broad stripes and bright stars” inspired Francis Scott Key to write a song that eventually became the national anthem. This is that flag. When I viewed it at the Smithsonian in DC it was an awesome sight

It was the perfect day to get my craft on!!
A Flag for our Country written by Eve Spencer is a great collection for our class library. It is a NF book which can be used as a RA or S especially on Flag Day! This book is all about the flag and Betsy Ross life when making the flag.
Happy 243 Birthday, America!
Celebrate with drum and fireworks, USA 🇺🇸 Littens!!!
And, of course, some patriotic reading!
Remember
Billy Hanks, South Carolina
The Flag that flew against the sky
that fateful September day
was ragged, burned and bloodied
But not defeated in any way.
The people who rallied around her colors
They fought and died and saved
many trapped inside the falling building
o'er which the flag still waved.
So remember, people, give thanks today
to our heroes everywhere.
All who risk all that they have
just to show they care.

An interesting, not book related, Flag Day Post. A picture I took of a prison cell door at Edinburgh Castle covered with prison graffiti including what is thought to be one of the earliest depictions of the American Flag. Some of the prisoners held here were crew members of John Paul Jones, the father of the American Navy. 🇺🇸
