While listening to the first book of the series, Crocodile on the Sandbank, I realized that the characters felt somewhat familiar, so I went through my library and found a German version of the second book and an “old” audiobook of book no. 14 on TAPES!!! 🙈🤣🙈🤣🙈 I must have read/listened to them years ago and never realized they are part of a series. 🤦‍♀️ I am starting it now!!! 💪
@Ruthiella

Clare-Dragonfly I remember listening to those books on road trips as a kid—yes, on tapes! 😄 3d
Ruthiella No wonder it seemed familiar! 😂 3d

Even though the cover is the least appealing I have seen so far, I enjoyed this mystery very much. Especially because it‘s set in Egypt and the surrounding of an archeological site. Amelia is a likeable character, witty and very assertive. 💪💪💪

CatLass007 I‘m particularly fond of Bastet! 4d
Ruthiella This is a fun series. I started it in 2015 and read about one or two a year. Almost finished! 4d
MariaW @Ruthiella While listening to the first book of the series I realized I knew the characters somehow and must have read a few books some time ago. 3d

Another #OffMyShelf book. “book with a map” Also #SeriesLove2025

This was excellent. The family relationships were lovely and it was often quite funny. Peters made a good call when she decided to “resurrect” the Master Criminal.

Due to the dangers of travel during WWI, the Emerson‘s opt to remain in Luxor indefinitely. Ramses becomes embroiled with the secret service again and the whole family travels incognito to Turkish occupied Palestine.

TheSpineView Excellent!🤩📖 5mo

BiblioLitten Do they have to be read in order? The Peters books? 5mo
Ruthiella @BiblioLitten I think they are best read in order, though the earlier books are a little more silly than the later ones. But you could try one out of order just to see if it fits your taste. Also, if you like and have access to audio, the narration by Barbara Rosenblatt is fantastic and the books read by Susan O‘Malley are good too. 5mo

#12DaysofChristmas @Andrew65

This was written in 1975! 😱 How can you not love a late-Victorian-self-sufficient-no-nonsense-badass female archaeologist protagonist who travels to Egypt in search of antiquarian objects and the freedom to do as she pleases? Throw in some worthy sidekicks and adversaries as well as a mummy-run-amok, and you have one heckuva fun historical detective read. I see more Amelia Peabody in my future.

Bookwormjillk I‘ve been meaning to read this one 6mo
dabbe @Bookwormjillk I thoroughly enjoyed it and need to read the others in the series, too! Too many series, too little time! 🤩😂🤗 6mo

Third book for #ChristmasCrimeChallenge

Amelia and Emerson‘s now grown children take more of the center stage. Ramses‘ past as a secret agent comes back to haunt him and is it possible that the Master Criminal is still alive? Or is someone masquerading in his place? And lady journalist Margaret Minton returns to interfere and poke her nose in.

Lots of fun, romance and adventure and Emerson cursing. 😂

#whereareyoumonday

Back in Egypt with the Emersons in 1916 or so who are up to their usual tricks of solving crime and making trouble. I‘m not a huge fan of the Ramses/Nefret storyline - too much “romance” for me, but I can tolerate it because the rest is just fun.

bookandbedandtea It's been a while since I dipped into this series but I'm tempted now because I LOVE the Emersons, especially Amelia herself and Ramses. I never really warmed up to Nefret but I didn't find it affected my enjoyment of the books. 💗 6mo
Ruthiella @bookandbedandtea I do love this series. It‘s about as close to romance as I am comfortable with. One of the things I love most about Amelia and Emerson is the steadfastness of their relationship…no will they or won‘t they - they just are. 6mo
DGRachel Angsty Ramses is my least favorite Ramses. 6mo

Ruthiella @DGRachel Me too! I‘m just not built for that kind of tension! 😂 6mo
bookandbedandtea @Ruthiella Yes! I love that they encounter (and create) all kinds of drama but their relationship is never in question! Communication issues drive me nuts. 6mo
bookandbedandtea @DGRachel Yes there are a couple books where he's pretty angsty and those are not my favorites. 6mo
DGRachel @bookandbedandtea I made the mistake of binging the whole series in an audio reread and I was ready to throw my phone across the room during the teen/20s Ramses nonsense. 😂 6mo
Ruthiella @DGRachel 🤣🤣🤣 I have spaced out reading them over years and it still grates! (edited) 6mo

The plot was a bit convoluted and took a bit to "dig in" but honestly, by now, I am in just for Amelia Peabody, Emerson, Nefret, Ramses, David, Abdul and the rest.
The audiobooks are totally fun.

Ruthiella They are so fun for the personality and growth of the characters. For me, the actual mystery plots are secondary. Or maybe even tertiary, since I also like the historical settings usually as well. (edited) 6mo
CarolynM What @Ruthiella said. I love this one for the first look at grown up Ramses. 6mo

Mehso-so

Was the mystery satisfying? Yes! Was the banter delicious? Absolutely! Was the racism freaking heinous? 💯 I'd love to continue with this series and I get that it is a product of its time (70s era writer with Victorians cavorting through Egypt) but I just can't stomach it.
