Pickpick

This book is so freaking interesting. The author gives detail of working for Salomon Brothers in the 1980s right as they were at the apex but about to fall apart. My co-op somehow snuck this into her development reading.

This gem is back to its old tricks (commuting). Seen here with the enormous pile of stuff I "needed" to take to the office today.

^^in a nutty nutshell. And yet… the conspiracy theories about shutting out retail investors to protect a few big funds? That story is also easy to tell.

229 “the question Portnoy and others were asking was hard to ignore: Why did coincidences always seem to benefit the people in power?”

258 “coasting on a cushion of air as he spoke TRUTH into the ether of the INTERNET”😜

262 “ if anyone had gamified Wall Street, it was the American people.”

Mehso-so

“Disruptor stories” are maybe too mythologized—the established system surprised when newcomer‘s emotion, naïveté, or resentment becomes a threat. Mezrich adds artificial drama with snarky fictions (Musk neuralink, DID billionaire hedge funder Griffin own a throne made from skulls of vanquished competitors? ?). Who did Ben actually interview? Aren‘t free markets built on competition & failure? Who gets regulated and who is “too big to fail?” 2021
