Fight Club | Chuck Palahniuk

Pickpick

Masculine rage & nihilism in response to the absurd, cruel world we've made for ourselves was better addressed by Brett Easton Ellis &, if we go further back, Dostoyevsky ? But I found the rotten heart of the story compelling & true because of the struggle for power, autonomy, & "meaning" in the face of total alienation. Bonkers & satirical, but chillingly prophetic. Palahniuk's staccato prose style isn't really my jam, though. #90sSpringFling

TrishB Just started this morning. Great review 👍🏻 5y
Tanisha_A Great review! It makes me want to read it, but not now. I'll keep it for some other time. 🙃 5y

BarbaraBB Great review, thanks! 5y
Cinfhen Fantastic review!! I guess I‘m just not that attuned to my inner male rage. 😆 5y
batsy @TrishB Thank you! Look forward to your thoughts 🙂 5y
batsy @Tanisha_A Thank you, T and it's a challenging book to recommend; based on reviews as you can see it's hard to tell if it'll be a hit or miss 😁 5y
batsy @BarbaraBB Thanks! 5y
batsy @Cinfhen Bahahaha I'm going to have to "detox" with some Trixie Belden tonight ? 5y
BibliOphelia Great review that really sums up my conflicted feeling re: this book. Also, Trixie Belden forever!! 🤘 5y
AlaMich Kudos to you for being able to read about male rage when it feels like we are currently drowning in it in IRL. 5y
batsy @BibliOphelia Thank you! And yes, #Trixie4Life ❤️ 5y
batsy @AlaMich Yes! That's the chillingly prophetic part about this book. But I also wonder how much of an influence it had (especially the movie, which I now need to watch) as a cultural moment, even if its meant to be read as satire. 5y
youneverarrived Brilliant review! I‘m starting it later on today. 5y
batsy @youneverarrived Thank you! Can't wait to hear what you think about it. 5y
Susannah I‘ve never wanted to read this book (I try to stay away from books that are going to exacerbate my [unfortunately] natural “ugh, men” attitude), but I could read all day about Palahniuk‘s literary lineage. Awesome review! (edited) 5y
batsy @Susannah Thank you! And I know exactly what you mean. "Ugh, men" is kind of my default state these days ? 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Brilliantly reviewed! You‘re right about his writing style..annoying! 5y
batsy @erzascarletbookgasm Thank you! Yeah, if the book was any longer I wouldn't be so forgiving about the style 😆 5y
merelybookish Excellent review! I just CAN NOT with this author. He's on a list of men I'll never read. Maybe my loss I'm okay with that. 🤓 5y
batsy @merelybookish Thank you! And yes, I'm at peace with probably never reading another book by Palahniuk again 😆 I don't regret reading this one, but his style is not quite my jam. (I have a list of men, too, and Franzen is on it 😅) 5y
