The Business of Blood | Kerrigan Byrne

This is quite a switch from this author‘s normal historical romances. It‘s a very dark and graphic mystery centering around a young woman, Fiona Mahoney, who becomes London‘s first Post-Mortem Sanitation Specialist (as she dubs herself) who cleans up after gruesome crimes. She‘s a flawed character who I couldn‘t help rooting for. Her personal mission is to track down Jack the Ripper who murdered her best friend/cousin. Also involved in her story🔻

robinb are a police inspector, an underworld crime boss, and a Native American assassin. This was so well done. I‘ve always enjoyed Byrne‘s romances, but I‘m hoping this foray into dark mystery will continue as I was pulled into the unsavory, dangerous slums right along with these characters and am totally invested to see where this crusade ends up. Very well done. 4.5/5⭐️ #DoubleSpin @TheAromaofBooks 2mo

Although a great deal of the original contemporary documents & files have now been lost, those that remain are here examined to see what they tell us about the thoughts of those investigating the crimes at the time. It follows the murders chronologically with a great deal of cross-referencing to provide an objective look at the killings. This is not a seamless narrative of the crime that reads like a novel. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf This is a meticulous examination of the remaining physical evidence (letters, reports, interview transcripts etc) of the crimes of Jack the Ripper. There's a lot of additional information about the people named & events that occurred on the periphery of the murders contained in the references & I spent a lot of time flipping back & forth between the main book & the reference section.

OutsmartYourShelf It's definitely given me a lot to think about. This is definitely more of an academic style read & can be a little tough-going at times, but I found it worth persevering.

So, I am not #DNF this one, but I don't foresee myself picking it up and browsing through it in any definite timeline. It is good, and I am enjoying it, but physically, it's difficult to read (the typeface is hard on my eyes). So, I feel it's not a “relaxing/fun“ read for me right now. It will stay near my bed though, so I do plan on getting to it eventually.

In book four of Stefan's Diaries, Stefan has moved on from the US to England. It has been 20 years since he left and he has settled into life on a farm in the rural countryside. Things are quite and he has come to terms with his nature. Then he goes to London with his employer on business and gets drawn back into the Vampire world. I am enjoying the progression of Stefan life. However I feel like he...

TheSpineView ... can't leave well enough alone. He could have avoided so much heartache. 😫 #SeriesLove2023 @Andrew65 5mo

This was chock full of psychological suspense. I found the denouement a little disappointing but also realistic in a way. In the end, this had a lot to say about the effects of suspicion on one‘s psyche. I feel like one could read into the themes more but for me this was an entertaining, escapist, and well written story- just what I needed right now to take my mind of the stress of moving. I‘m going to watch the Hitchcock film later today.

Bookwomble I think I read the story in a collection of Jack the Ripper themed tales. The film I've definitely watched, and it's fantastic and atmospheric. Enjoy! 😊 10mo
psalva @Bookwomble Thanks! I‘m looking forward to it. I‘m tempted to start reading all the books Hitchcock made into films and do side by side comparisons. 10mo
Bookwomble @psalva That would be an interesting project! 😁 Off the top of my head, I know I've read Conrad's The Secret Agent, was an early Hitchcock adaptation as Sabotage, and also Vertigo, which was just as thrilling a read as the film is to watch. 10mo

When I got caught up on the Maeve Kerrigan series, someone told me to give the Lacey Flint books a chance while I wait for Jane Casey to write more. It was a good comp for Maeve. I think this was darker than the Maeve books, and actually scared me a little if I read too late. The final twist is a great one. I definitely want to read more to see where it goes.
