Was fascinating how differently I felt about Shoiji Morimoto at different parts of this. I went from genuinely curious to is this guy for real? 1st time reading a memoir where it‘s the concept that‘s the hook rather than being someone that I already admire. He‘s at no point trying to paint himself in the best light (he goes out of his way to let you know that he‘s not driven by altruism but at the same time, only charges train fare for his time)

Japan medieval history is very confusing and Clements makes it more confusing by giving the reader too many compressed details and not enough clear analysis. Still, lots of interesting stuff here. I was entertained to learn the origins of sushi and kabuki theater.

Hoopla library app audiobook. Based off a true story of the fin-de-siècle strike which was inspired by a recent shipyard strike of the time and area. Good for perspective and gleaning the female experience, historical perspective. I liked the characterization of our protagonist and the difference of her island dialect and character. More sexual themes and content than the book but not the film adaptation of Poor Things. Putting me in an Asia mood.

Ruthiella This one is definitely on my list. 👍 1w

This is a good introduction to Japanese horror and provided a lot of detail on the history of the cat myths as well as example stories. The illustrations were also nice.
3/5 read for good history of mythology but don‘t expect a lot of lyricism in the tales.
I finally started unpacking all of the little treasure for my living room!

I had never heard of the do nothing rental person on Twitter/iInstagram, so I was intrigued. He doesn‘t charge anything, but his transportation costs(if a meal is involved, they pay) He then writes about experience on line. Most of the requests are quite calm. One person requested to have him bid her goodbye at a train station as she left Tokyo for good but didn‘t want a friend there bc it would be too emotional. She just wanted someone there.

BarbaraBB I‘ve stacked it 🤍 2w
JanuarieTimewalker13 @BarbaraBB cool, it‘s very Japanese imo. And I love to read Japanese Lit, but pretty sure this is my first Japanese memoir. 2w

The Earthquake Bird | Susanna Jones

1. Tagged. The Earthquake Bird by Susannah Jones. I remember being obsessed by it some years ago. - I even once missed my commuter train stop on my way home from work at theatre in the middle of the night because I was so hooked 😅
2. Unheimlich (=eerie, uncanny), a YA romantic thriller omnibus by Ursula Isbel. Got it on my 13th b'day. Still reread it every once in a while.
3. After Dark and/or Dance Dance Dance, my two faves by Haruki Murakami.

StaceGhost Yuki I love your choices! Murakami is such a good reread. I think my most rereads are boring— Jane Eyre, Anne of Green Gables, and Anna Karenina. 1mo
dabbe Yowza! 3 I've never heard of and now on the TBR. Thanks for sharing. 💚💙💚 1mo

Yuki_Onna @StaceGhost Classics aren't (necessarily😉) boring! At least not Jane Eyre😁
I've never read the other two. I must say that I'm impressed by your rereading of Anna Karenina 🤯
