This is a little random, but do you remember that Fatboy Slim song, 'Weapon of Choice' with the video that has Christopher Walken doing an elaborate solo dance routine in a #grandhotel ? Remember that lyric, 'Walk without rhythm, and you won't attract the worm....'? I'm reading Dune now and I came to this part where the characters are walking without rhythm so as not to attract giant desert worms. Coincidence, or was Fatboy Slim a Dune fan?

rretzler I‘m guessing the entire song is a Dune reference. Isn‘t the Weapon of Choice in the song the voice? Bene Gesserit voice, maybe? 5y

I love this- I need to check out some lists of literary references in pop music- Alice in Wonderland, Lolita, and 1984 come to mind, but I'm sure there's a ton.. 5y

Billypar @batsy If the length is a deterrent, I put it on a two week schedule to finish and it's been surprisingly easy to stick to- should finish by Thursday if I meet the remaining targets 🤞 And I'm liking it, so that helps! 5y

Billypar @readordierachel Ha- agreed: I remember watching it over and over in college. I just read that Spike Jonze directed it, which I didn't know, but it makes sense- I'm a big fan of his work. 5y

Billypar @BarbaraBB @rretzler I binged a little on internet lists of songs. I never knew Devo's 'Whip It' was inspired by Gravity's Rainbow. And then there are those I feel like I should have guessed like Sympathy for the Devil being inspired by Master & Margarita. 5y

Just started this behemoth and have arrived at the desert planet Arrakis. Not even 100 pages in, and there is already much political intrigue and religious lore to interpret in the Dune universe. Off to a promising start overall 🏜️ 🐛

Billypar @Cinfhen It was a birthday gift from my boss- a favorite of hers. I usually don't read 800 page chunksters or sci-fi, but I'm a sucker for just about anything I hear is on someone's all-time favorites list. 5y

rretzler A great book and a good series - that is until I bailed on book 4. I do plan to go back and reread and finish it off one day. 5y

Billypar @rretzler I didn't even realize it was a series until I started reading it. Such an impressive achievement to imagine a world in this level of depth- seems like much more than the plot developments. 5y

rretzler That‘s the beauty of it, I think. The entire society and political intrigues that Herbert created is mind-blowing and wonderful. And his son has continued the series. I‘ve read several of those and they are good too (better than book 4 of the series.) I believe Herbert was influenced by Edgar Rice Burroughs‘ Mars series and Isaac Asimov‘s Foundation series, which are also very good, if perhaps a little dated. 5y

Suet624 Such a good book. I read it soon after it came out - hundreds of years ago! - and I still have scenes popping up in my mind from it. It‘s on my list to read again. 5y

Billypar @rretzler A woman on the subway today saw me reading Dune, and she was telling me how it was a favorite and changed her life. She also really liked Children of Dune, but said God Emperor was tough to get through, but the end was good. Interesting about the influences- thanks for those! 5y

Billypar @Suet624 That's pretty neat to be an original fan of something that would become a classic. I'm a little disappointed that I'm about 5 years too old to have had Harry Potter in my childhood when the first book came out. With this one, I'm still early, but enjoying it so far! 5y

#BookMail Pt20 And this is Dune in the Penguin special editions. I consider myself a sci-fi reader but I‘ve never read this. I have seen the mini series based on the book but never got around to the novel itself. A lot of “hard SciFi” like Heinlein & Herbert kinda left me cold as a teenager, I much preferred McCaffrey & Wyndham so I need to make up that lack before it‘s too late!

Billypar I'm reading it this year! I'm tentatively planning for June for no good reason other than the rhyming aspect 😀 #DuneInJune 5y
